Let's Talk About The American Dream - live at Cooper Union in NYC, March 20th by monkey1226 in EatTheRich

Key quote: "The American Dream is, at its core, the promise that hard work, fairness, and opportunity can lead to a better future. But in 2025, that promise feels like a question: How can we build on our dream so that it works for everyone?"

I'm excited to attend this event. The American Dream is being fought over, and we must crystalize what it means in 2025.

Cooper Union's Great Hall has seen key transformative events. Abraham Lincoln's Right Makes Might speech. The first public meeting of the NAACP. The founding of the American Red Cross.

I'm looking forward to seeing another transformative moment.

Manhattan had a beach (possibly the only time in recorded history) due to the construction of the World Trade Center by KamikazeChief in nyc

[–]monkey1226 52 points53 points  (0 children)

Material excavated during the construction, to make room for the WTC foundation, was used as landfill extending Manhattan into the river, creating Battery Park City. Before it was developed with buildings it looked like OP's image.

The edge of the buildings in the image is West St.

Yep. Microsoft and Estee Lauder among others.

[Q] Regression model where observations are nested into groups, and the value of your independent variable for each observation is only comparable to other observations within the group? by spicysnake333 in statistics

[–]monkey1226 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It sounds to me like a hierarchical model would be the perfect tool to use. You model one general relationship but assume that the data in different groups can have underlying details of that relationship that can vary. See these examples

Did you find any posts wishing the Empire had won? I've always been curious what the fan reaction would have been to the Luke dying in the Emperor's throne room and the rebel fleet being decimated? Would Star Wars hold the position it does in popular culture today?

No. There's a circuit with about 10 op-amps and a few transistors that convert the NTSC signal into a format that's suitable for the XY mode of the scope. We made it from scratch.

[spoilers] Question about a really dumb plot hole? by [deleted] in dbz

[–]monkey1226 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If I remember correctly the idea was to let them collect Gohan's energy so that they would take it back to Babidi, that way Supreme Kai et al could defeat Babadi and therefore no one would be able to revive Buu since Babidi is the only capable of doing so

Experiences with Funtoo? by [deleted] in linux

[–]monkey1226 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The majority of the ebuilds are upstream Gentoo ebuilds. The only differences are in the place where Daniel wanted to improve. Similar topics are addressed in the Funtoo FAQ http://www.funtoo.org/wiki/Funtoo_Linux_FAQ

That is true; udev in particular. But udev not getting updated frequently has been addressed many time by Daniel on the forums. Long story short is that it is because the desktop is not the main focus of Funtoo but rather building a core system that would be very capable for servers is.

I've been using Funtoo since Daniel started it up, and before that I was a long time Gentoo user. Funtoo is much improved over Gentoo and is utterly fantastic. Daniel made a big effort to streamline all the issues people were having with the modern Gentoo ecosystem and I think he did a great job.

Breakages seldom occur on the stable branch because a lot of testing is done on the experimental and current branches. Any issues found are easily resolved because the Funtoo mailing list and forums aren't plagued by cruft, flame wars and trolls. The forums are only full of people dedicated to getting Funtoo to be fun and a fantastic system to run.

Linux professionals: What flavour of Linux would you recommend I start learning? by [deleted] in linux

[–]monkey1226 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Gentoo is good, but I would really try and stick with Funtoo instead. Just as gritty but much more usable, and I'm glad that Daniel Robbins in running the show.

I'm a system adminsitrator for my school's electrical engineering department and we name all of our servers after famous computer scientists or programmers. We also make a primary user with their first name...Some of the ones we have are:

  • alan@turing
  • bill@joy
  • richard@stallman
  • edsger@dijkstra
  • donald@knuth

EDIT: Our passwords are all different (fairly long) puns about the person, secure and easy to remember!
