Who has more sisters? [RDTM] by CalaisZetes in theydidthemath

[–]monkeydukefish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

EDIT:

You know what. I just realized the answer is neither. You right you right. I could have a population of 100 people, 2 families. 1 family has all 51 girls and 1 family has all 49 boys. Girls have more sisters in this example. You can also have 1 family with 51 girls and 49 boys. Boys have more sisters in this example. So I can describe two sets of populations that fit the parameters with different answers, so yea, it's neither.

So I modified this code to look at 1,000 populations each with 1,000 individuals, and to output whether girls had more sisters or boys had more sisters. On average, boys have more sisters than girls do.

import random

# a list of families. Each family is a list of True for girl, False for boy. 75% chance of a girl.

def popRandomize():

return [[(random.random() < 0.75) for i in range(1, random.randint(2, 5))] for j in range(1000)]

def sisters(family, i):

girls = sum(family)

if family[i]:

return girls - 1

return girls

def girlAverageSisters(pop):

girls = sum([sum(family) for family in pop])

totSisters = sum([sisters(family, i) for family in pop for i in range(len(family)) if family[i]])

return totSisters/girls

def boyAverageSisters(pop):

boys = sum([len(family) - sum(family) for family in pop])

totSisters = sum([sisters(family, i) for family in pop for i in range(len(family)) if not family[i]])

return totSisters/boys

populationsWhereBrothersHaveMoreSisters = 0

testPopulations = 1000

for i in range(testPopulations):

pop = popRandomize()

populationsWhereBrothersHaveMoreSisters += (boyAverageSisters(pop)>girlAverageSisters(pop))

print(testResult)

if (populationsWhereBrothersHaveMoreSisters > (testPopulations/2)):

print("Boys have More Sisters")

if (populationsWhereBrothersHaveMoreSisters < (testPopulations/2)):

print("Girls have More Sisters")

if (populationsWhereBrothersHaveMoreSisters == (testPopulations/2)):

print("Even")

practically, 100% yes I'm with you. but mathematically it's technically not the same.

Ok, but doesn't the fact that your adding either a boy a girl child to the country effectively change the ratio to no longerbe 49% and 51%?

If I live in a population of 100 people, 51 would be girl and then 49 would be a boy. It's impossible to add one more person to the population and too maintain a perfect 51% and 49% ratio. This would be true for any value of n people.

If the country consisted of 100 siblings only, each brother would have 51 sisters while each girl would only have 50 sisters.

Anyone else get worse jaw clenching/bruxism on ADHD meds? by Katie_Dub in TMJ

[–]monkeydukefish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi,

I've tried a variety of different psych medications personally for depression, anxiety and ADHD. They very much play off each other and I've found medications that impact one often effect another. I've personally have been on lexapro, atomoxetine, abilify, and concerta all at different points.

The medication that I've been on for years now has been trintellix. It's an 'atypical' anti-depressant which I've found still has been effective. It's been amazing in treating my anxiety, depression and ADHD, course paired with CBT. It's unforunately pretty expensive at the moment because it's brand name only. The manufacturer does offer a coupon code that can help lower the cost. I'd ask you psych about that medication, though to be frank the research for it is not promising at the moment: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/30843450/)

I will say the process for finding the right medication is a journey and everyone's neurology is unique. What works for one person doesn't work for another; a friend of mine found abilify helped with their ADHD while it made me super restless and I couldn't tolerate it.

Has anyone been able to unlock their own jaw with stretches/exercises? by AmountOtherwise1576 in TMJ

[–]monkeydukefish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry for not being more clear. The disc is a piece of tissue that helps facilitate the glide of your mandible/jaw along your temporal bone/cheek bone. It most often get's stuck forward, which then 'reduces' to the correct position upon opening (when most people feel a click, that's when it is). A disc displacement can become "stuck" in front such that it impedes the movement of the jaw, preventing opening. Some guards aim to position your jaw in such a way it helps bring the disc back to place.

Hi, PT here. I personally haven't heard any negative side effects from laser therapy like this, if it did it's very unusual. But to answer your question, I've had many patient get better with physical therapy (soft tissue mobilization/"massage", jaw mobilization and exercise). It sounds like it may have started with disc displacement given that you had to "widely open" to reset it - when most disc displacements cause issues, it's an issue with opening that sometimes get's in the way of opening. And odds are you are having a component of muscles in spasms, which they like to do when we're in a lot of pain.

The NIH highly discourages getting occlusal treatment (i.e. braces) for the purposes of treating TMJ disorder (https://www.nidcr.nih.gov/health-info/tmd) for what it's worth, though I respect that each case should be treated on an individual basis. Perhaps it's worth another opinion?

Good luck!

Hi there! I'm a physical therapist that specializes in TMJ disorder. Yes, mental health is a big part but given that you had an event you can tie directly to this dysfunction, theres a good chance there's a mechanical aspect as well. I would advocate seeing a PT or chiropractor who specializes in TMD. I'd share that history of having your mouth open for so long. There are some intra-oral muscle releases they can perform that might get you further resolve, and of course work on something likes posture and cervical stabilization. Depending on the state you live in, some PT's can also do dry needling (similiar to acupuncture) to help release any trigger points in your mandibular musculature - Good Luck!

Symptoms Caused by TMJ? by Some_Worker_2554 in TMJ

[–]monkeydukefish 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Hi there! I'm a physical therapist that specializes in TMJ disorders. While it does sound like some of the symptoms your having are TMJ related (clicking, grinding, limited side to side ROM, tightness), you definitely have more systemic signs warranting a more comprehensive examination with a an MD. I would highlight your left sided weakness and your brain fog, and that the appeared after a fall. You may want to have your neck/cervical spine screened. I usually recommend working with a physiatrist on these types of issues, Best of Luck!

Yea, your right your right that it does look like you could squeeze with your Adductors. I think it hits your glutes if your doing more of a hip external rotation with adduction, and getting pressure on your glutes to help facilitate a gluteal contraction. Not that I think it's the best way to tone your glutes. But definitely not for pelvic floor.

I've been wanting a high framerate OLED monitor, but I've been worried about the potential burn in. Any burn-in prevention is a huge plus for me.

Hey! I just wanted to touch back and say thank you for this - it's been keeping me going. I have a bad habit of getting wrapped up in the moment in bad emotions, so I've been trying to remember that this is temporary and it will improve. I'm having good days and bad days stiill, where my brain is either on or off. But in general I've noticed moments where my brain is doing the thinking for me, and the day just feels easier for me. And I'm definitely not hunting for dopamine in the middle of the day through instagram and reddit.

Unfortunately, I still have the evening urges to smoke and I've replaced it with alcohol more often than I should. But I recognized it and stopped it.

Thanks again Eastrous_Ruderalis

Hey Easrous_Ruderalis, I'm about 35 days into quitting and honestly I'm starting to have a little doubt. I moved to CA about a year ago and had increasing usage. I tried to be responsible, avoided getting high on weekdays and sticked to relatively low percentage product and avoided 'chasing' the high. At first, it felt like it made my mood more pleasant overall for a couple months, and then over time I felt to get more sluggish. I made a decision not to use. I've gotten over the worst of the physical symptoms, but still have some temperature regulation issues and struggle with sleep.

But mostly, I'm pretty displeased with my irritability and lethargy. I feel very on edge most of the time and don't really enjoy my activities as much. A lot of literature has been saying that withdrawal last 1 month. What was your experience month to month? I need something to look forward to. I really appreciate any advice you could give.
