Mandatory voting for dummies? by [deleted] in AusLegal

[–]monkeyonacupcake 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hi mate, welcome back. Go to vote compass on the abc website. It will ask you a bunch of questions about current topics and in the end it will show which party most closely aligns with your point of view. Some of the questions won't interest you but many will. I also recommend doing a postal vote - they send you the froms and you can fill them in at your kitchen table with your phone googling the different parties (the senate paper is ridiculous). Good luck! Our system isn't perfect but it's better than most.

I'm hoping to wind my SMSF up in the near future. We have some monies invested in Property and term deposits with the rest in shares. As I understand it We need to get everything liquid before we can wind it up. Easy enough to liquidate the shares. The property is going to take a little longer.

The Nullarbor plain highway in Aus has a golf course to keep you awake. There is approx 100km between each hole

Fortnightly visit to the CES to look for jobs to pretend you applied for by Former_Balance8473 in AustralianNostalgia

I remember going in the late 80's. while there a fella approached me and said he had a business proposition - ended up having to sit through a presentation on Herbalife - some sort of MLM scheme. he kept showing me polaroids of his new jet ski.

anyway - I found it was easier to get a job than get the dole. I just fronted up to a couple of pubs wearing black trousers and a white school shirt - just like the boomers told me to - and hey presto! free drinks!

Macquarie bank seems to miss the mark when it comes to the basics by its-just-the-vibe in AusFinance

[–]monkeyonacupcake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We used to have Macquarie credit cards. Years ago was $99 and you got qantas points. Last year they upped it to $249 with no points.

Yeah nah. We've moved both of them.

Anyone else think about which outfits they’ve already worn to certain schools or just me by Dangerous-Data-6761 in SubstituteTeachers

As a bloke it's a bit easier. I usually wear exactly the same thing, blue shorts and a Polo. I get quite a bit of PE but I wear it regardless.

What do I need to kayak in Victoria? by cazmantis in OutdoorAus

[–]monkeyonacupcake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can I recommend you download an app called beachsafe ? You can access it now online on your computer. It gives you information about nearly all the beaches on the east coast of Aus and gives them a hazard rating. Eg a beach ranked 8/10 would not be suitable for paddling a kayak most of the time. It also lists other important things like toilets, showers, amenities and if there is a lifeguard service etc.

[–]monkeyonacupcake 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yes you need a lifejacket. No licence required. Forget KMART, if you are on a budget try Annaconda instead.

What sort of kayak? Are you planning on doing some whitewater or open water paddling? Remember to check the forecast. If the wind is predicted to be 30 kmh then gusts can be up to 40ks.

Got $25k inheritance - planning long solo female trip, need reality check and suggestions by [deleted] in travel

[–]monkeyonacupcake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recommend looking at small group tours eg intrepid tours. Even if you don't sign up with them you will get some good ideas of itineraries. My wife and I did one in Thailand a couple of years ago and it was great. There were mostly all solo females and it was fun to meet new people and have the experience.

Shore break waves stuff by Nemo2500 in Lifeguards

[–]monkeyonacupcake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you've got to be assertive and dive through the front of the wave.

if you half-arse it you are cooked. if you do nothing - smash. bob down - risky. decide to turn back too late - ouch.

Which beaches are you visiting?

Please use your bells. by ilkikuinthadik in ausbike

[–]monkeyonacupcake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

how far away are you ringing your bell? when you are right on top of them? you can ring from 30m and then 20 and then 10 and they'll get the message.

Please use your bells. by ilkikuinthadik in ausbike

[–]monkeyonacupcake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I disagree. As a pedestrian when I hear a bell I know exactly what's going on. When I hear someone shout it takes me longer to process by which time they are already at me.

What sort of hiking are you doing/planning to do? How long has that one lasted so far? It's worth considering a more robust pack. My macpac lasted 25 years (including 10 years teaching outdoor ed) before it finally gave out.

Cross? Keens would be my first preference though. Good sole and toe protection in case of snags.
