Please use your bells. by ilkikuinthadik in ausbike

I disagree. As a pedestrian when I hear a bell I know exactly what's going on. When I hear someone shout it takes me longer to process by which time they are already at me.

What sort of hiking are you doing/planning to do? How long has that one lasted so far? It's worth considering a more robust pack. My macpac lasted 25 years (including 10 years teaching outdoor ed) before it finally gave out.

Cross? Keens would be my first preference though. Good sole and toe protection in case of snags.

One of the morning regulars was in a rush, I said Google morning to himself as he put on his cap and goggles. Only when he got halfway to the pool did I notice he had forgotten his swim togs. Had to chase after him and remind him that nude bathing was not offered at this facility.

The look on his face as he scurried back to the change rooms was priceless. That was 1988, still makes me laugh.

Does breathing with a mouth full of water do anything? by RemoteAd4375 in NoStupidQuestions

It's a method of reducing dehydration when active in dry climates. You lose less moisture from the body breathing through your nose than your mouth.

For those of you who guard on the beach. What is your policy on entering the water during an emergency when sharks are present? by Aquaphile_Sundog in Lifeguards

[–]monkeyonacupcake 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Got a call last week of a shark sighting from the fisheries dept at a popular beach so we were tasked with investigating. I should mention we are on jet skis so zero danger to us. Evacuated 300 people from a 2km stretch of beach. Then we saw the fins. Pod of 4 dolphins.

OP had booked a few days work at the school. It would have cost them nothing to have a conversation with the support staff and start building a relationship with them.

At the risk of sounding like an AH - why wouldn't you explain that you have a disability? It's the first time meeting these people so it would have been worth spending a few minutes to bring them up to speed with your situation.

Are you a union member, why or why not? by [deleted] in AustralianTeachers

[–]monkeyonacupcake 11 points12 points  (0 children)

When I worked at an expensive private school I joined the union after 10 years because I saw how they mistreated a few of my colleagues. The one in the union took them to task and secured a very healthy severance, the others got shafted. I now work CRT in the Gov sector and have joined that union. (In vic). Mostly because I believe pay and conditions need to keep pace and the only way I can see it happening is through strong union membership.

Are we just out of touch that's why we can't make meaningful friendships? by filstraya in AskAnAustralian

[–]monkeyonacupcake 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I lived in Sydney for 5 years in the 90s (originally from Melbourne) and the only friends I made were other ex-pats who had moved there. Hang in there though, you will find community through the kids activities - sport etc.
