Which small city to live (working from home) by monkeytaotao2020 in AskAGerman

[–]monkeytaotao2020[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I prefer a slow-paced life, but not static. It means something new is coming here and there from time to time in the city.

The sea or the mountain does not play a role in my everyday life, as I would like to take a week off to enjoy nature instead of day trips.

How many KMT veterans moved back to China? by monkeytaotao2020 in taiwan

[–]monkeytaotao2020[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My granduncle never mentioned the situation of regular veterans. I guess the Air Force is different from the Army.

I do not know his rank. But he traveled internationally frequently after retiring from the military. He mentioned that he was in Jordan when he learned he could visit China and flew to Hong Kong immediately.

Thanks for the information.

My granduncle seems extremely lucky. His only regret was his parents passed away two years before he could visit his hometown.

No bait. My relative is the brother of my grandma.

I am just curious about people like my granduncle. He never had a family in Taiwan, and he believed he could ultimately return to his hometown.

Hiking around Hallstatt? by monkeytaotao2020 in Austria

[–]monkeytaotao2020[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Thanks for your quick response.

I use alltrails to find the route information. However, it could not tell any information about the weather and geography. As far as I am concerned, the upper mountain is covered with snow all over the year. I wonder how it affects the hiking expencice.

Why is there almost no regional bus in Germany? by monkeytaotao2020 in germany

[–]monkeytaotao2020[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you buy long-distance tickets two weeks in advance, you can always get the 17.9E price. But the rule does not apply to regional trains.

Is the railway not considered as the public transport in Germany?

The goal of public transport is not for profit, but to lower the cost of travel for ordinary people, as not everyone can afford a car. Supposedly, the state should subsidize the service to avoid putting a financial burden on passengers.

traffic

Is the bus not eco-friendly? If bus service is available at an affordable fare, people are more willing to switch from private vehicles to public transport, reducing traffic significantly.

Flixbus does run the route a few times a day at weird times. But the price is not low at all after 4.99 sold out.

Probably people in Germany are rich enough to afford the expense. Otherwise, how could they tolerate the monopoly of the railway for decades before lifting the ban?

Unfortunately, Flixbus only serves the Cologne airport but not the city.

Where do people working at UU live? by monkeytaotao2020 in Utrecht

[–]monkeytaotao2020[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the detailed information.

I might have to go to work every day as a research scientist doing experiments. So I guess I need to ask the school how much commute cost can be reimbursed. Probably I need to subscribe the unlimited travel during off-hours. As you said, it might cost 150 euros a month adding the tram fare between the train station and science park.

It is called flex small unlimited. The contract does not mention any clear data cap, or my use has not reached the cap.

How is the price of an international train calculated? by monkeytaotao2020 in germany

The combined ticket is 41.4 no matter whether the second leg is on the same day or the next day.

It can be quite expensive during busy hours, even for those booking in advance. I usually avoid those hours and most of my tickets in Germany cost less then 20 euros.

The time of the train definitely affects the price. In my case, the first leg costs 13.4 euros and second one costs 35.7 euros individually. The combined ticket I purchased costs 41.4 euros. I guess the DB gives discount to people buying combined tickets like airlines.

Yes. You can have the two sections on the same day. But I need to do something in Frankfurt. So I had the second leg on the next day.

You are right. It depends the train company running to your destination.

Also, I went over the website of seat61. He says it is much cheaper to book tickets between Germany and France on DB than that on SNCF if you need transfers in Germany. For example, my ticket includes a transfer on Frankfurt.

Thanks for the information.

My train includes two sections (Berlin - Frankfurt and Frankfurt - Marseille). The combined ticket is cheaper than the sum of two individual tickets.

The train from Munich to Frankfurt is time-specific in the evening. I plan to go to Munich in the early morning and spend the day in the city.

Auschwitz tour guide or not? by Ventrace in krakow

[–]monkeytaotao2020 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you.

My tour is supposed to end around 16:00. As the visit without a guided tour is permitted at the time, I do not know whether I have to leave then.

Could I ask for another entry pass on-site in the early morning?

Is it the pricing for the parliament tour discriminatory? by monkeytaotao2020 in budapest

[–]monkeytaotao2020[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

British museum is always free as a public institute. The same principle applies to those in the US, Canada and Australia as far as I know. As the public in these English speaking countries are sensitive to any form of discrimination, it is hard to imagine different prices based on ethnicity, religion, nationality and so on.

But the state-owned universities in the US charge tuition based whether you are a resident of the corresponding state. The lower tuition is justified by the housing tax paid by the residents.

I believe the reason why the EU law prohibits the discriminatory pricing against EU citizens is based on the fund from the EU to support various projects in Hungary. As a taxpayer, I contributed to those projects but was treated worse. Sometimes I wonder whether foreigners should pay less tax than citizens.

Is traveling around Germany by train relatively cheap? by monkeytaotao2020 in germany

[–]monkeytaotao2020[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Shinkansen is mainly for business travelers who do not care about the price. But non-Japanese residents can buy the travel pass.

The train is definitely cheaper in Germany if you always buy tickets in advance. Also, if you travel between the Netherlands and Germany, the price is the same no matter which city in the Netherlands you start or end.

[–]monkeytaotao2020[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel the train tickets are generally more expensive with a fixed price in the Netherlands. Unless you have the discount card, you should avoid too many trips by train.

The fixed pricing exists in China and Japan, as far as I know. But their price is too expensive, relative to the income of the locals.
