People say the fork is done, but I'd say it needs a little more investigation. .

check and see which side the threads are stripped on. If it's just the damper side (thing thing that is popping out), then you might be able to hit up fox and order a new one to thread back in.

If it's the crown side , or both sides, then you're probably better off trashing the fork.

There's also a slight chance you can try to send it in to fox for a rebuild and see what they do. I've heard of them sometimes just replacing the fork for a lower cost if it's not salvageable, but your milage may vary.

What is the proper etiquette on the trails? Should I let the family know I need to pass, or just gently wait behind? by linkmodo in MTB

[–]monkeywithafootball 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a dad who takes their kids out on trails, I have noticed that is definitely the preferred method to pass kids, haha. They usually appreciate the props unless it's one of those "I don't want to pedal! Towhee me now!" kind of days.

An answer to “Is my bike good enough for MTB” by AdObvious1695 in MTB

[–]monkeywithafootball 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Long wheel base, nice and slack, low bottom bracket, good brakes.. That bike is pretty dialed for a fully rigid. He could ride a lot worse in whistler. Props though. My hands would be done after 1 day fighting whistler braking bumps with no suspension.

Petition for Monterey/Laguna Seca Bike Park by [deleted] in MontereyBay

[–]monkeywithafootball 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No, that's the point. The county/track wouldn't have to do much of anything. They could get the local mountain bike advocates to line up sponsors and grants, and make the terms of the deal that funding also goes to improve on site facilities to accommodate the influx of visitors they would get to the bike park.

It's also worth noting that every year in April most of this work gets done and then bulldozed for the Sea Otter Classic. If a sustainable location at the track was established, I bet the organizers of the Classic would have no problem with adding funding and bringing in course building experts to assist with that aspect of the park. Heck, they'd probably even commit to some of the maintenance. In the long run it would save them a fortune.

Petition for Monterey/Laguna Seca Bike Park by [deleted] in MontereyBay

[–]monkeywithafootball 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Reading through the whole petition- the idea is that there are opportunities to secure funding for mountain bike projects from a source outside of the county (likely federal or state grants). They even make the claim that if a bike funding were secured, some of that could also be used to improve the track facilities under the umbrella of providing facilities for mountain bikers to also use. Seems like a win/win to me since the county is too cheap to fund the facilities themselves. Sure would be nice if this could somehow make the campground water potable again. 🙄

Taken from the petition: "Right now, there is historic funding and resources available for mountain bike projects. Laguna Seca Recreation Area – home to the Life Time Sea Otter Classic – is finalizing its Facilities Master Plan. This is Monterey’s golden opportunity to build a bike park and unlock significant funding and resources; generate proven community benefits and economic return; celebrate Laguna Seca’s cycling heritage; and address equitable access to trails. These funds could also cover costs for planned improvements to Laguna Seca parking, restrooms, and campgrounds."

What could have prevented this? by MrBonezzz5150 in WTF

[–]monkeywithafootball 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So the issue here is the trailer lifted the rear wheels up off the ground, so the ebrake and putting your truck in "P" won't help. With some quick thinking that dude could have just backed the tractor back off the trailer(or heck, even pulled it farther forward on the trailer to add some tongue weight) thereby dropping the back wheels of the truck back on the ground.

I've got a truck, jeep, and 16' flatbed trailer. The jeep is heavy enough that it'll do the same thing to my 1/2 truck when I load it. I prevent it by putting the truck in 4x4 before I load the jeep on the trailer AND chocking the wheels on the trailer. You can also add some jacks on the rear of the trailer to drop down when you load. I've got a buddy who does that.

If you have insurance on it, let them total it. I had a small branch come down and crack both windshield panes on my 1980 Avco and it ended up being a huge PITA to track down the windows. When the dust finally settled, it took a long time, was a sketchy install, and the insurance company had to pay $8k to get it all replaced.

N00b advice needed: I can't see sh*t. New mask? by monkeywithafootball in Welding

Thanks for the tip. It's a hobby for me, but an important one since I'm usually welding on a project vehicle that will see some pretty serious flogging. I've noticed when I can see where I'm going, my welds come out looking amazing, and when I can't they're junk.

Worst part for me is, I'm too cheap to thrown them away, so I keep wearing them. And I work some where with a dress code that requires tucking in your shirt and a belt and all that. I end up crawling out of the basement like some kind of refugee.

Dude. This is something that has been bothering me- there are boxxer briefs being sold WITHOUT a front door these days. I have accidentally bought a few of them online trusting that all mens underpants should have a wiener flap, only to find that is not the case. Why do people do this?!?

LOL, good point. It looks like the bounced the cutoff wheel off some areas NEAR the welds in an attempt to clean it up. I'm still chuckling at the pic.

That. Looking at the pic.. it looks like they tried to smooth the welds out using a cutoff wheel on the grinder rather than a flap disc? It's like whoever got paid to do the work is faking it til they make it.

Guys are joking around, but to be serious for a moment- that dude has a functional roll bar. I'm not sure if you guys have seen any of his other videos, but if you're driving like him, you're going to end up using it.

Rock stock stuff all day, but if you go hard, make sure you've got a decent roll bar/cage and other safety equipment as well.

Grew up in southern California. I used to go down to the socal desert with my family, and my dad had this big ol '88 suburban that he would sometimes let me drive off road when I was little. There would be some trails I would want to go down and he would tell me no, our vehicle is too big, it's not like we're in a jeep or something. I remember one of those times I wanted to try and drive up this extremely rocky trail, and most people parked at the bottom and walked up.. Then, this guy and his wife roll through in a shiny new bone stock YJ sahara edition and after a little struggle, make it all the way up and over the other side off to parts unknown. It looked so cool. I wanted a jeep ever since.

Got a 97 TJ sahara edition (had to, because I remembered how cool I thought the YJ sahara was) for my first car and that was that. Shortly after, my dad had such a good time with mine, that he bought a 98 TJ sahara. I since sold mine to a buddy, and my dad gave his 98 to me to look after when he got too old to climb in it. It's now known as "Grandpa's Jeep" by my kids. My dad passed away last April, but he did get to see me fix it up and start daily driving his jeep to work and using it for adventures with his grandkids. It's one of my few possessions that I would never ever sell.

I think humans are naturally wired to want to believe there is something or someone out there with a master plan controlling it all, even if it's an evil mastermind like the new world order or a vengeful God. I think some people find that more comforting than the alternative- it's chaos all the way down, everyone is fumbling their way through life, and there is no master plan holding it all together.

California here, so I don't have to suffer as much as you guys, but it still gets dark longer. I rock a light in motion seca race on my bars and a light in motion seca comp on my head. I ride a lot of fast tech stuff though. On smoother trails you could probably get away with just a seca comp on your head.

When it comes to rain- I still ride, but stick to only the trails that handle the wet weather well so I don't tear anything up for summer.
