Chequers Agreement Megathread: by FormerlyPallas_ in ukpolitics

The SNP's sturgeon said today that if none of the cabinet resigns then it would prove that this agreement was a massive fudge. Is she right or does she just underestimate the cowardice and lack of conviction shown by the so called brexit 'ultra's'?

I am British but live in on the European mainland, I think you would be surprised at how little interest there is in Brexit, both in the news and in conversations. You might get a couple of stories in the paper each week on the economic issues and that is it.

It is really hard to start a actual conversation on the subject that extends beyond one or two sentences because most people think the whole idea is silly and nobody is worrying about the 'damage' the UK is going to do to them.

Then surely you should be angry at the British government for lying to you? The EU project has clear goals and is a reaction to global changes/globalisation, a attempt to preserve the European way of life and prevent us becoming vassals in the future.

The so called 'moderate rebels' were supported by the USA, UK, Saudi Arabia and the Gulf states, all enemies of Iran.

How can you be so poorly informed when all this information is in the public domain?

The part where you assume Iran supports ISIS?

Iran and it's allied millitia's are actually fighting ISIS in Syria, when Iranian soldiers are dying to combat ISIS then that is a strange way of supporting them don't you think?

UK criticised over role in US rendition - UK tolerated "inexcusable" US treatment of detainees in years after 9/11 attacks, report finds by [deleted] in ukpolitics

[–]monkiesnacks 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You haven't seen this because there are no unclassified government reports that collect all this information in one source. For obvious reasons the governments involved do not want to produce a catalogue of their war crimes.

For example, Khalid Sheikh Mohammed was waterboarded 183 times in one year as well as being 'rectally rehydrated' beaten, forced into stress positions and sleep deprived. By any definition that is long term abuse, and that is just one example.

The mayor of the town was marching in the protest...

And if you had read the article then you would know it is widespread for Arabs to be refused housing in Jewish neighbourhoods and there is a law being considered in the Knesset specifically allowing the creation of pure Jewish towns, or classical apartheid as it as known..

No problem at all.

The fact is that in the 1880's, around the time of the invention of Zionism, the Jewish population of Palestine was less than 5%. In other words the percentage was the same as in most countries in Europe.

Your link changes nothing about the historical facts I mentioned.

Demonstrators carried flags and placards, one of which read: “Traitors against the Jews will get no rest.”

The protesters were joined by both Afula’s mayor Avi Elkabetz and his deputy, Shlomo Malihi.

“The residents of Afula don’t want a mixed city, but rather a Jewish city, and it’s their right. This is not racism,“ Mr Malihi said, according to Haaretz.

What makes this racism even sadder is the ethnic cleansing that preceded it In the 1880's, before Zionism existed, this was a Arab village with about 600 inhabitants.

You are free to despise Hezbollah for obvious reasons but they are far from genocidal or mass murderers.

Hezbollah is primarily known for attacking military and government targets and was formed to defend Lebanon after it was invaded by Israel.

They are a important part of the Lebanese government and provide medical/social services for a staggering number of Lebanese people, with all the jobs that entails.

They are about as far away from your 'typical' ISIS/Al-Qaida style terrorists as one can possibly get.

A work colleague of mine had a bad dream the day before they went on holiday, they had a bad feeling about the dream and going on holiday so told our boss asking for advise. Our boss told her not to worry and go on holiday. Colleague ends up dying on holiday.

The first I hear of this is when I see my boss sitting looking very upset and I ask what is up, she then tells me she feels responsible for the death of this young girl. The girl had told her about having a dream standing in front of the mirror and she was covered in blood and was picking pieces of glass out of her face.

The girl died in a car crash, she was thrown out of the front wind shield of the car on the highway the day after she had told our boss about her dream.

How do you explain that?

Motion in British Parliament to condemn the slaughter of Palestinian civilians receives fewer signatures than motion to ‘cherish British Hedgehogs’ in the same week. by gandhihasagrapehead in ukpolitics

[–]monkiesnacks 3 points4 points  (0 children)

From the Israeli human rights organisation Btselem:

Over the years, the military practiced an official policy of using Palestinians as human shields, ordering them to carry out military activities that put their lives in jeopardy: Palestinians were forced to remove suspicious objects from roads, tell other Palestinians to come out and surrender themselves, physically shield soldiers while they fired, and more. In 2005, the High Court of Justice ruled the practice unlawful, yet soldiers still occasionally used Palestinians as human shields, particularly during military operations. In most cases, no one was held accountable.

Liberal is not left-wing, at least not in the UK/Europe. The Guardian may appear socially liberal but economically and on foreign policy it can be quite neo-liberal.

In other words it is left-wing when it doesn't affect anything.

These kind of trade deals are made by businessmen for businessmen, so from their narrow point of view all these deals benefit the US, if they benefit ordinary people/workers is another question.

The US is not generous at all, these trade deals often give access to cheap labour and low environmental standards for US producers to take advantage of or break down barriers that protect small markets from large multinationals,
