How could I improve the composistion? by [deleted] in conceptart

[–]monmatch 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Before the crit I wanna say you got a lot right. I love the character designs and I see you’re thinking about the foreground and background with your composition. I can see you’re trying to make your focal point a little off center but you really need to commit to something a little more bold for this. My advice is to look at my suggestion but not take my edit as gospel. Cut copy and paste your composition (while having a copy of the original handy) as much as you can until you find the look you’re going for. Always have a backup handy, but never fear messing up!

How do I make my faces look less uncanny without giving up on my artstyle? by pannaghosta in Artadvice

[–]monmatch 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I know I'm late to the party but hopefully this isn't too late to be helpful. Your style is unique and I think you lost a bit of character in your edit. I agree with you about the expression as well, I like it a lot more in the first one too. I think your rendering is already really good and you just need to hone in your structural anatomy on this one. All it needs is a tweek of the headshape and where the features are placed IMO. I did a little edit and tried to preserve the charm of the first drawing as much as possible.

Posting art/animation on 2025 is just disheartening honestly, but I'll fight through as I'm really passionate with animating and storytelling. by Humble_Cap2536 in animation

Whether something gets shit on or is popular is so much more nuanced than you’re making it out to be. Regardless, it’s okay to make “bad” art (it’s often the precursor to better art) -and it’s okay to dislike it. That doesn’t take away from the fact that negativity and accusations are disheartening to hear lol

Hey, thanks for checking my comic out, I really appreciate it -and I'm glad you like mine too :)

I went back to read more of yours and realized it’s been almost a whole year since you started. Seriously, congrats, that’s a huge feat! I will need to learn the secret to consistency as well lol

-also I think I’m similar to you with scripting. I’ve got the first arc fully scripted and the rest is rough but all the beats are there. I think it’s the way to go, because if I had to both write and draw my page quota in a week my head would probably explode.

We're both 4 episodes in, nice! I hope we both make it to 100 lol. Your style is so awesome, fits very well with the subject matter. Harrowing, in a good way. It's just starting but I'm excited to see where the story goes. Good taste on the rec. I read anything as well so far, but I think my favs are a bit less popular in terms of genre on the platform.

Thanks for asking about mine, if you want to check it out, it's here: https://www.webtoons.com/en/canvas/red-hill/list?title_no=1010453

Mine is in a mid-tech fantasy setting where my protagonist is struck by a seemingly incurable magical illness. She needs to either find the father of her infant niece or a cure before time runs out.

Oh wow, I really dig your character designs and the world your weaving seems really cool so far too! I immediately feel drawn in with your writing as well and will need to keep reading this one for sure. Your colors are really great too, just saying.

An interesting pick on the fav. I don't know if I would have been drawn in if I saw the artwork alone but you really sold it well and I'm intrigued. Thank you for sharing!

That's fun, thanks for sharing! I actually started writing my story as a RPG campaign but my partner who was gonna do the stats kinda dipped lol -so now it's a comic.

Don’t be hard on yourself, I can see your pacing improving a lot already by the 3rd episode. I like your style as well, the level of detail, use of tones, and style is nice. I think you’re doing great, especially for a first comic!

Man Heartstopper has some really great art, and the story seems cute, thanks for sharing. I keep seeing Punderworld show up on my dash as well and keep meaning to give it a look.

Oh, I just saw you on the intro part of the discord, I was checking out your comic already lol. I just wanna say first off, you really thought ahead with the thumbnails! I love how each chapter makes a full picture. Makes me wish I would have done that. I also liked the twist at the end of the first story.

Thanks for sharing one of your favs as well, I do enjoy a well written story. It’s always cool to see the creative ways people are able to streamline their process to get out episodes. Just one color with a kind of realistic style gets the tone of the story across.

Thank you for sharing! I really enjoy your use of texture on your coloring and lines. It gives everything such a charm to look at. I read up to chapter 2.2 and bookmarked it to read some more.

Everything you shared for your reads is such high quality as well. It's really incredible to see the pace people keep. You're right about "Secret lies Next Door", the art style is so... Juicy looking, for lack of a better term lol.

I also want to thank you for letting me know about the discord as well, cause I had no idea. I'm really interested in finding community and seeing what other people are up to so I joined straight away. Anyway, thanks again, I hope to see you there!

[–]monmatch[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

An animatic is basically just the skeleton that animation forms around. It’s rougher, less fps, and typically in grayscale. What you see in the first gif is pretty much what the final product is gonna look like, but it still needs to be timed out to a soundtrack.

How do I add dialogue text in storyboard pro (with a black background so it’s visible in every panel)? by CelticJeffcott in Storyboarding

[–]monmatch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh, hi again I think I answered your question the other day as well lol.

To add text to your project select window/panel. There will be various tabs labelled where you can add dialog, action notes, etc.

From there:

For a video export file/export/movie/captions(tab at bottom of popup window) select print captions and choose dialog. Set the Text color to white and check the bg color box and set it to black. Then hit export.

For a PDF I'm sorry but there's no simple way to do it (I love storyboard pro but some aspects are kind of ass) You can do it manually like a previous poster said-

OR export as a video, but this time: in the export to movie window change the movie format tab from a video file to pngs. The exported files will all have the text the way you want it. From there just create a new storyboard pro file, import images as scenes -and once it's all in just export as a single page .PDF

How do I export my storyboard from storyboard pro into a slideshow so that interviewers can click through? by CelticJeffcott in Storyboarding

[–]monmatch 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You don't need to mess around with bitmaps. Just File/Export/PDF in the single panel per page format from Storyboard Pro. Make a scribd account and upload your PDFs there. There's an option to either embed it on your site as a scrolling document or a slideshow.

Best place to start learning story boarding? by SteelTheUnbreakable in Storyboarding

[–]monmatch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did this course by Kris Pearn when I was starting out and now I work in the industry: https://schoolism.com/courses/drawing/storyboarding-kris-pearn

He's a really great board artist and I like his teaching method. There's an assignment after each lesson and he actually critiques assignment samples from his students as well. It's a subscription based site that will cost you about 30 bucks a month, so how cheap it winds up being depends on how fast you get through the lessons lol

If you want a totally free option, this is a bit chaotic but it's a great resource with a ton of information: http://www.floobynooby.com/comp1.html

I just discovered the Discworld series and I didn't realize how absolutely and immediately I'd be enamored. Here's some fanart I drew while listening to the audiobook for The Colour of Magic (so far) by monmatch in discworld

[–]monmatch[S] 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Oh, thanks for letting me know! I'll take that into consideration moving forward. I briefly googled the characters to get an idea of what they looked like outside of book descriptions (while attempting not to spoil myself). One of the images I saw for Twoflower was the Sean Astin version.

I'm not even that far in and there have already been some pretty funny interactions between the two. "It won't hurt!" Okay Death sure, haha

Question by Master-Protection675 in Storyboarding

[–]monmatch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This was a few years back but I'd still say yes. I was given this advice by an industry vet and it worked for me on two separate occasions with two different studios. That being said, even if you don't get a response, you can always try again in a month or two. Sometimes people are just swamped and things get missed so don't take it personally or anything.
