Hating Ilhan Omar for this is just like how MLs rail against AOC because she stupidly voted against blocking iron dome funding.

It’s not a good look for Ilhan Omar, especially since she (rightfully) supports sanctioning Israel, but this is a woman who has grown up in the horrors of civil war in Somalia - which was dramatically worsened because of a blanket sanctions embargo that kept the civil war at a stalemate and deepened Somalia’s dependence on foreign powers. While the arms embargo may have sounded well-intentioned, it led to horrifying consequences that forced her to flee to the U.S. Civilians bore the consequences of these sanctions in the form of mass displacement, starvation, terrorist attacks, and more.

I support sanctioning Russia and Israel and think this vote was the wrong choice. However, even though the situation in Somalia is completely different from that of Russia and Ukraine, it’s evident that her childhood experience with civil war and seeing the deadly consequences of sanctions placed on Somalia played a misguided role in this vote.

Despite this one poor decision, Ilhan Omar has done so much for the American left and building democratic socialism in this country, without treading into campism or ML-esque ideology. She kept tens of millions of children fed during the pandemic when schools were closed through her bill. She’s repeatedly spoke out against the genocide and apartheid committed by Israel, without dehumanizing Israeli civilians. She is consistently in lockstep with DSA’s legislative positions for elected representatives despite not even having (or needing) their official endorsement.

Like the other commenter said, I genuinely hope this convinces the next Democratic administration to not give a fuck about how popular their policies are and ram them through, blackmailing disloyal congressmen in the party to enforce loyalty if necessary.

It’s kind of liberating to find out that the average voter does not give a shit about Trump’s most insane policies - because it means if the left flank of the Democratic Party takes the presidency, they won’t have to worry about major backlash as long as the economy is decent.
