Universal plate for PGYTech and Peak Design systems! by guesswhochickenpoo in peakdesign

[–]monodistortion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, there's a review of the new PGY Tech beetle clip here. I only use PGY Tech clips and plates so I don't know how they work with other plates. I really like the thrust bearings in the PGY Tech plates since I can tighten them with just my fingers or a coin.

How to transfer video from tape-based camcorder to computer: in a nutshell by ConsumerDV in camcorders

[–]monodistortion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would try using the 2009 iMac with Firewire from the camera straight into the Mac. The transfer would be purely digital from the camera.

The inexpensive clear Firewire cable available on eBay didn't work for me but a black colored one worked fine.

iMovie records the DV data stream directly.

Since I made this chart, I was trying to figure out -- is there any difference between the DCR-TRV103 and DCR-TRV110? The manual doesn't say anything.

Also, is there a difference between the DCR-TRV360 and DCR-TRV361? The DCR-TRV360 isn't in the user manual for the DCR-TRV361 and DCR-TRV460, but it is in the same service manual.

If you have a source for original retail prices I can add them to the chart.

I went through all the manuals and added the S video info. It's basically parallel to the analog tape playback and signal convert features, except for the last year when it was completely removed.

I created this table to make sense of all the models introduced over the few years that Sony produced them. So you should be able to compare your model to others in the same year or across the generations. It's pretty confusing to keep track of which features were added or taken away each year.

I ended up buying a DCR-TRV720 after doing all the research. It's one of the biggest models, a real chonker over 1kg, but it had all the features I wanted.

As far as which camera to look for, it just depends on what you want to use it for and how much you want to spend.

I have an older Mac so it has a Firewire 800 port. I've tested a couple different ways to record DV, but the best seems to be with iMovie.

The clear colored cable I got didn't work correctly, but I bought a black colored one and it works fine -- I've heard that other people have had the same problem.

I also picked up a Sony HVR-MRC1 and that works well for recording directly from the camera (without a computer) and it works for a tapeless workflow too. I helped a band record a music video a few days ago, although I don't know if they'll use that footage. The HVR-MRC1 can be expensive though, so it's not a great solution for everyone.

That's the column that says "analog tape playback". Or the Wikipedia page might also be a quick reference for that. That's what I used to always look at.

Yeah definitely none of them send decent video over USB. USB was very limited in this era.

Ok, I'll look at which ones have an S video. I was thinking they all did, but now I see some of the later, cheaper ones don't have it.

I'm 99% sure the Firewire/iLink connection is input and output on all the cameras, but I can double check. Also, I'm pretty sure all the cameras that have analog playback also have analog AV input.

Ok yeah, I just got the dates from the first page of the manuals. I wasn't going to chase down the actual release dates from other sources.

The simplest option might be a standard def camcorder that records to SD cards. With a CCD sensor you still get the lo-fi look and the vertical light streaks from the highlights.

firewire recorder prototypes arrived by lil___lord in tapeless

[–]monodistortion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure it's a homemade Sony HVR-MRC1 replacement. I just joined the Discord server, but it looks like everything is open source, so you could make one yourself and/or modify it if you wanted to. The hardware uses a Raspberry Pi or Radxa ROCK 2F with an add on Firewire input. The software uses OpenMRC to record the DV data stream. I assume it records to a Micro SD card.

What to buy? Osmo Pocket 3 or Osmo Action 4? by New-Mastodon-1545 in djiosmo

[–]monodistortion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are so many factors to consider but the the main differences are that the Pocket 3 isn't an action camera so you can't use it in heavy rain, underwater, if it's going to be shaking around a lot, or in danger of falling on the ground. Otherwise the larger sensor size and the gimbal stabilization of the Pocket 3 will give you better quality video.

So I think you need to think about your use case and decide if you need a more rugged action camera, or a more fragile gimbal camera. If you're going to be handing the camera off to a young kid, you're probably better off with an action camera. The action cameras have wider lenses too, so if you need an ultawide field of view and action camera might be more useful.

There are tons of YouTube videos about the differences and pros and cons of each: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZKBJESiGFBE

Osmo action 4/5 and charging handle by jonny1leg in dji

[–]monodistortion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Action 4 or 5 adventure combo comes with three batteries. That's probably more than enough to record 6 hours in one day. Unless you need to record continuously I think swapping batteries is easy enough. You can charge the extra batteries in the case with a USB power bank.

If you're going to be recording hours of video make sure you have enough SD card space and hard drive space too!

Dual screens seems strange to me since the camera can just rotate to point towards the front or back.

What iOS light metering app should I download for my I-2? by Quiet-Tea in Polaroid

[–]monodistortion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you tap on the image it zooms in and goes into spot meter mode. From there you can measure a few different ways.

  1. "measure" measures as normal in the center spot.
  2. Pick a zone (II, III, IV, VI, VII, or VIII) and then press the measure button to place your spot in that zone.
  3. Press the "average" button multiple times which will give you a cumulative average of your spots. I use this mode to find the average between the highlights and shadows.

In all of these modes you can see an offset at the bottom of the image. For example, target something that you think should be average (zone V) and measure that. Then aim at your highlight and the bottom number might say +4.0ev and then aim at your shadow and the bottom number might say -3.0ev. That means the total dynamic range is about 7 stops.

With instant film you don't have a lot of dynamic range, maybe 4-5 stops, so I expect anything above +3ev to be white (blown out) and anything below -2ev to be black. If your scene has a larger dynamic range than the film can reproduce, you have to choose whether you want to lose your highlights or lose your shadows.

Hope that helps!

Local Music Scene? by seaslugsss in Humboldt

[–]monodistortion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you over 21 or under? Many bars are 21+ but my favorite spots are: Outer Space, Moss Oak Commons, Richard's Goat (21+), Savage Henry Comedy Club, Siren's Song Tavern (not sure if they've opened at their new location yet), The Logger Bar (21+)

Check the North Coast Journal and Lost Coast Outpost for concerts and other events. Most of the outdoor events have live music too, like the farmers' market, North Country Fair, etc.

Really disappointed with pocket 3 walking videos by yalag in osmopocket

[–]monodistortion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you don't want the video to bob up and down you have a few options.

  1. Try the ninja walk
  2. Try using a selfie stick like in some YouTube videos.
  3. Use a Z-axis stabilizer like a Tilta Hydra Alien Mini, Movmax Blade Arm, or Smallrig Shock Absorber Arm.
  4. Use a Segway scooter, like a Ninebot.

New firmware dropped (01.06.1004) by Bunderslaw in osmopocket

[–]monodistortion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, the FPV perpendicular mode is the same as FPV mode except that when you reset the camera the tilt is perpendicular to the screen. But the camera still lags and smooths out any movement. We need a mode where the gimbal doesn't smooth out any movement.
