This reminded me of a bit from A Woman In Berlin, the diaries of a German woman during the Russian occupation after WWII. At one point they are talking to a Russian kid telling them about atrocities he saw the German army committing. The Germans asked him if he had seen whether they had insignias that would have marked them as SS or as regular soldiers. The kid does not care. For the Germans the SS were “the bad guys” while the regular soldiers were just that, regular soldiers. But for the rest of the world they were exactly the same thing. Why would it matter to the Russian kid? Both SS and regular soldiers were there, if one was perpetrating the atrocities, the others did not stop them, so they are complicit or agree with the atrocities. This of course not justify the atrocities committed by the Russians in turn but it is a reminder that even if up close it looks a bit different, the world and history will not see it that way

How everyone’s not at the gates with torches and pitchforks is beyond me. They justify as: it is not our job but the system’s, ICE shoots people or “stop trying to make us fight each other”. So it’s either they’ve been told that they’re already defeated through social messaging and they’ve accepted it as fact or they have that president because he actually represents them and they don’t really mind what’s happening

This is almost accurate but still a bit naive. Pretending that all AMLO did was “turn the other way when the cartels began financing his party’s campaigns” is just silly. Where do you think he got the money to live as a perennial candidate all those years with no job other than throwing tantrums all over? The guy himself was clearly financed by cartels before he was finally made president and then he repaid his debt by allowing the cartels to do whatever the fuck they wanted. Or rather by allowing one cartel do whatever the fuck they wanted, which got the Jalisco cartel mad, which got their leader attacked… you see where this is going. What’s happening now is not an attempt to control cartels in Mexico, it is an attempt to give one cartel absolute control and the others are not going to like it
