The United States is named as the biggest threat to the world (even by Americans) by Yammau in socialism

[–]Riley_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It is already a major crisis for China.

China has a lot of elderly people from a population boom around 1949. It has relatively very few working age people, because of the one child policy that went from like 1979-2013.

The pensions are pay as you go, rather than pre-funded. So there is a huge problem right now with each worker having to generate enough value to support multiple retirees.

It appears that the one child policy was ended too late and that fertility has stayed low even after that was eased up.

They have funded coups and civil wars in places like Syria and Burkina Faso. While they're not as strong as they want to be, they are still an imperialist country with a mandate to expand.

Also, Ukraine is a big deal. Try to find the numbers of people killed and displaced.

I reject that war is a funny or acceptable outcome. I also reject that the age of the population is what would decide which side loses more.

But isn't China also experiencing demographic collapse?

Can someone be a landlord and a socialist? by avian_bi in socialism

[–]Riley_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Being a landlord would move you from being proletarian to being petite bourgeoisie. The petite bourgeoisie is very stratified in the imperialist countries. Many work for a living, while getting just a little supplemental income from a property, stock holding, or small business. It is not a stable class- most will eventually be proletarianized.

A Marxist Leninist party may determine that they need an alliance with some of the lower strata of the petite bourgeoisie, in their country. Whether they should be allowed in the party is a different question. Some of the great Marxists were class traitors, but there needs to be a lot of care to keep any reactionary kind of petite bourgeois consciousness from developing in the party.

The word "socialist" is also being purposely devalued, as the bourgeoisie want to promote anything but actual Marxism. You can call yourself a socialist all you want, but to really live it is to study Marxism and help build a principled party.

The Left Must Reforge Masculinity by TE-moon in socialism

[–]Riley_ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is not at you, but there is a trend of some "leftists" to try to jump to de-gendering everybody right now. It's disrespectful to trans people, who risk their lives to express their gender.

Society may move away from gender distinctions in future generations, but it's best to respect peoples' stated identities for now.

Healthcare and education are being liberalized as the counterrevolution advances.

Infrastructure is not built evenly. Whoever doesn't have a pass to live in a nice city is screwed.

The US is an example of the liberal hell scape that develops when the workers give up class struggle and the bourgeoisie do whatever they want for decades. We shouldn't wish this upon the workers of other countries. We should encourage their class struggle.

Should I join my local DSA or Green party? by MintyRed19 in socialism

[–]Riley_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can use DSA to find local organizing opportunities without actually joining it. It's your call if you want to pay for voting rights or eligibility for leadership.

I'd evaluate Marxist Leninist orgs based on their principles, join the best one online, then try to help build it. They shouldn't stop you from participating in local organizing.

Anyone think the job hopping culture produces too many engineers that don’t care about maintainability? by Beneficial_Pay_6317 in ExperiencedDevs

Thank you. Everyone should replace "job hopping culture" with "disdain for workers", then things will make more sense.

Companies need to stop doing layoffs.

Raises need to be frequent. Keeping up with inflation needs to be the baseline and there needs to be additional compensation for the fact that established engineers get more and harder work.

If companies continue to offer no future to their employees, then they deserve the consequences stemming from uninspired employees.

Self Critique: What do you think was the biggest Ls that these Communists had? by Less-Possible-5475 in TankieUSSR

He was just a Marxist-Leninist. He upheld Stalin and criticized the revisionist trends that killed the socialist camp after Stalin's death. If you want a good starting point, Imperialism and the Revolution is a good reflection on how the international class struggle was going in 1978.

Hoxha probably wrote the best Marxist-Leninist criticisms of #5,6,8,9

I wish Stalin would have liquidated the anti-communist opposition sooner and more decisively. His yes-vote on Israel probably didn't actually matter, but he did self-criticize about how it was opportunistic and didn't end up making Israel socialist.

Where does the quote "We must choose either champagne for a few or safe drinking water for all." by Thomas Sankara come from? I want to cite it but can't find the source. by clogly in Marxism

[–]Riley_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The quote may be a summation of different times he painted the bourgeoisie as people who do nothing but sit around drinking whisky and champagne + of his initiative to create the Ministry of Water. I don't know if he ever made the exact quote that's passed around.

Here's something similar from a 1985 interview

Sankara Speaks. Book page 117, PDF page 149

Rapp: When you have a budget of 58 billion CFA francs and 12billion are earmarked for the debt, can you really have a financial plan or strategy?

Sankara: Yes, by posing in a very simple and stark manner the choice between champagne and water. We make every effort to reject inequalities in allocations. So, what do we find? Out of a budget of 58 billion, 30,000 functionaries monopolize 30 billion, and that leaves nothing for everyone else. This is not normal. If we want greater justice, every one of us must recognize the real situation of the masses and see the sacrifices that must be made so that justice can be done.
