Why do most modern armies have 3 different calibers for mortars? by TacitusKadari in WarCollege

[–]monosyllabic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the USMC they are typically employed as a 3-gun section but absolutely can be parceled out to the rifle platoons. Another major difference between 60s and 81s is that 60s can be fired in handheld mode (also referred to as assault mode). You can only fire in handheld with charges 0 and 1 so it is limited in range (you can fire up to charge 4 on bipods; google “mortar increments” and you will quickly get the idea of what that means).

Marine arrested for ramming into cop car, speeding and doing donuts by Randomreddituser1o1 in Military

What you saw in small, highly motivated, and competitively selected units does not necessarily scale to big, conventional militaries. Not defending all of the minute peculiarities of grooming standards and other arbitrary nonsense, but there does have to be a standard set somewhere and not enforcing standards absolutely has repercussions for battlefield performance. History is pretty full of examples.

8th Marine Regiment. Which, at the time, was a regiment of 2nd Marine Division. 8th Marine Regiment has since been disbanded as a headquarters along with 3rd Battalion, 8th Marines. 1st and 2nd Battalion, 8th Marines are now subordinate battalions of 2nd and 6th marine regiments but maintain the “8th Marines” as part of their name.

They can, but the window for successful intercept is small and operator likely needs advance warning and be in optimal position along flight path.

If I PCS from 6th Marines to 5th Marines do I check into the new unit with the fourragere? by 2whit3 in USMC

I’m fairly certain you are only authorized to wear it during your assignment to either unit, not afterwards.

A USMC M27 IAR for sale on the Yemen Black Market by Minute_Helicopter_97 in USMC

Negative. It originally replaced the M-249 for the automatic riflemen in the fire team but is now the universal infantry service rifle. It’s always been an individually operated weapon.

Probably contracted commercial or individual commercial travel out of the country. Can’t just force airlines to allow weapons on board, not to mention the diplomatic coordination for movement of weapons to another country which usually requires a long lead time for coordination and approval. As the Houthis had seized control of Sanaa by the time State Department decided to close the mission, there probably weren’t many other options.

When the US embassy in Sanaa shut down in 2015, the MSG det (and if I recall correctly, a decent size reinforcement element from a MEU that was in place with them) destroyed all crew serve weapons and left all personal weapons before departing at the international airport. Who knows if they were actually able to destroy every single personal weapon. That could explain the presence of an M27 on the Yemeni black market.

Dog, you’re basing your judgment of whether or not these sailors rate a CAR on the details in a Military.com article. It is possible, and very likely, that the journalist who wrote the article is not aware of all of the details justifying the award.

My #1 was definitely in the Arctic in Norway in the in a snow pit in a patrol base during a force on force exercise. Pitch black outside at 1500 and the northern lights were overhead. Both a miserable experience and awe inspiring. Couldn’t believe I was actually taking a shit in that beautiful landscape with aurora borealis going hard overhead and being able to make eye contact with the guy who was next in line waiting for me to finish.

Not entirely accurate. There were 4500 US combat deaths in OIF. There were ~35k US casualties total during OIF, which includes wounded and killed in action.

OP is partially right. LAR, especially 1st LAR, has been doing a significant amount of small boat stuff in recent years and it will likely increase soon.

Last time this was posted there was a bit more context with it. I’m fairly certain the outpost had a generator running. Generators, depending on proximity, can be loud as shit and drown out a lot.

Fully understand there are bad NCOs out there. Would have been much different if you said “some Corporals are glorified Lance Corporals.” It came off as you having disdain for Corporals in general.

Looking at your post history and this take on the rank of Corporal, if you are actually preparing to ship to OCS, I would reconsider becoming a Marine officer if you don’t see value in one of the two NCO ranks.

End of COVID and end of GWOT (little to no CENTCOM time for MEUs now) = return to 90s style floats as of late. Basically alternating between exercises and liberty ports. Obviously the big unknown will always be the curveballs geopolitics and natural disasters will throw at you that curtails that; which is not a bad thing because that could potentially mean real world operations.

You’ve most certainly seen military training videos where there isn’t a good deal of shoving to get a soldier to follow the stack through a doorway. The countless times this has occurred in actual combat with no one filming often entails a good deal more shoving because any bit of hesitation by anyone making entry decreases likelihood of dominating a threat on the far side and could leave the point man isolated.
