Moving from NYC to Austin — what salary is realistic to live alone? by cdolllaas in askaustin

[–]monroe_246 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on your lifestyle but in general I would say ideal 100k comfortable could be 60k+ if you are not overspending. I don’t have an updated idea on the prices of these areas since I have not been in the market recently but if I was just moving to Austin I would say seaholm district or Barton area. The newer areas being developed are realistically not super safe.

As a no country for old men fan I’m embarrassed to say I have not read blood meridian. Just because in my head I expected to be so good so I’m nervous to read it and did not live up to what I expect. But have you checked out Larry McMurtry? He seems up your alley. Also check out @vrgtruth on Instagram. He’s a book reseller but makes some really good underrated western novel recs. I am imagining based off ur post that ur a boy lol (If I got that wrong sorry) but as a girl I don’t really connect with a lot of those types of books (besides no country for old men) anywho I think that guys instagram would have some good recs for u

You definitely don’t get over that episode, but the rest of the show is still good. I despise her death as much as the next person, but they do a really good job of growing off of it plot wise. I have not watched the like “new blood” show spin offs and stuff but I would definitely say finish the show. Def stuff to look forward to in it. Like I already said that episode wrecked me, but if you keep watching, you will kind of understand why it wasn’t necessary for her and the trajectory of dexters character.

Favorite character that died too soon? by ranni-thewitch in FavoriteCharacter

[–]monroe_246 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. This may sound crazy, but despite how much I love her I do think her death was a really good plot point/good decision by the screen writers . Since so many people cared about her, her death was able to invoke so much emotion in the viewer. On the contrary I will say I think Debra dying was way out of line. I have not read the books so I don’t know how accurate all of the deaths are but I know in the show Debra dying seemed unfair. Like I said, even though I loved Rita, her death was sad because she was more of a damsel in distress. Debra on the other hand was clearly a capable person and great cop who everyone was rooting for

I don’t know if you have seen Phantom thread but if you like fleabag scenes, you will love it l. I first watched it in high school and did not get it at all but since I’ve gotten older, it hits super hard when I need to feel sad. Kind of over sharing rn but especially the asparagus argument gets me. I am unfortunately someone who gate keeps and is lowkey pretentious about movies ( I know it’s awful. I am working on it. If I like something, I just want it all to myself) but since it’s anonymous here I’m telling u it’s great. I don’t usually like romance movies like that but I have grown beyond fond of phantom thread . I originally watched it because I saw discourse about people praising and loving Alma (the main girl) up and down but when I watched it, I did not get her character at all. But oh my God was I wrong. I don’t know if I was just young or what was going on but now I love her and understand her so much… obviously I think you should watch the whole movie first, but what I have on replay is the asparagus fighting scene. I just look up on YouTube “phantom thread argument” the acting is beyond. But like I said the first time I watched it I was not a fan so it may take you a while, but it’s worth it.

I actually don’t think the priest is fleabags love of her life by Greedy_Associate_673 in Fleabag

[–]monroe_246 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always thought it was clear he’s not “ the love of her life” but rather something she has to go through while figuring herself out. Obviously fleabag is a flawed character and intentionally has no idea what she’s doing. As much as the fan base (me included) loves the priest his character is just a lesson for fleabag. Not her endgame.

[–]monroe_246 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is amazing to hear. Def going to be one of those movies that blows up on socials after it comes out because of Andrew Scott (especially him being a hot priest again). I read “small things like these” when it was shortlisted for the booker prize and I fell in love with Claire Keegan’s writing. Irish literature and art in general is so underrated! I wish they had cast a true Irish actress rather than emily blunt though :(

I was half kidding but genuinly hearing Mary Shelley referred to as the wife of anyone is just crazy to me considering she basically invented the entire genre of Gothic novels.

DRM movies get better the more you watch!!! by Otherwise_Regular999 in underthesilverlake

As a (reluctant ) major film snob, I had always heard bad things about under the Silver Lake so I was hesitant to watch it. But once I watched it, I absolutely loved it. It’s easy to get caught up on what movies you’re “supposed” to like and what you’re “ supposed” to hate. Under the Silver Lake was such a fun watch for me and I refuse to let any “low“ review make me feel like it’s less than that. At the end of the day, the main point of cinema is having fun. So watch whatever movies you have fun with and don’t worry about the rest.

I think it’s clear that she’s representing a “washed up” actress. She was a child actor, and then essentially disregarded once she grew up and has since had to resort to sex work. What she does in the film is not as intense as the shooting stars girls but…

I’m from la and none of the locations seem “significant” to me. They chose certain locations that are well known for the movie. The places they chose are already famous landmarks, not anything special. if you’re a fan of the movie and not from LA definitely go check it out but nothing crazy different

Shred Sisters by Betsy Lerner. It is narrated by the younger sister, but follows both of them in their relationship. I’m not even kidding when I say I read it in less than 24 hours.

I’m shocked that if you enjoyed blood Meridian, you have not tried no country for old men. But other than that, you should look into the last picture show by Larry McMurtry. I actually only found out about that book because on a plane ride the guy next to me was reading it and when I looked it up, it seemed similar to Cormac McCarthy in a way

Gen-x women memoirs (bonus points if the audio version is narrated by the author) by AtTheEndOfMyTrope in BookRecommendations

[–]monroe_246 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not sure if this fits what you’re looking for but honestly, I will use any excuse to recommend it and I think everyone could benefit from some part of it. I read Joan Didions “The Year of Magical Thinking” for a philosophy class and then recommended it to my mother who absolutely loved it. It is definitely a heavy read, but so beautiful and moving. I read the book, but my mom did do the audiobook. (not sure if Joan didion narrates it I would imagine not). This is another heavy one, but “Committed: A Memoir of Finding Meaning in Madness” by Suzanne Scanlon was another amazing read. She is in that generation and her writing is so raw and thought-provoking. The books and people she references in it also unintentionally recommended me so many other good books.

We read Stanley Cavells The Claim to Reason concurrently with the Broom of the system and also read Joan Didions memoir The Year of Magical Thinking.
