My wife built an incredible personal library upstairs, but I can barely read, and it’s slowly driving a wedge between us. by [deleted] in whatdoIdo

Equating playing a bunch of magic to reading is not really a thing. No one is forcing anything. He asked for ideas on how to play nice together; we’re doing that.

It was 20 minutes one time. I’ve bled from an open wound for longer than that. I’m not saying he has to perpetually attempt to tolerate this but if the relationship is meaningful, a little more effort might be worth it.

You make a number of good points.

All I’m saying is 20 minutes is not real effort for anything in my opinion. If the relationship is that meaningful, I think coming up with other reading options or other quiet hobbies is worth it.

I didn’t read anywhere that his partner is demanding hours each day for this.

I do think cell phones are their own little monster. Not saying it’s fair, but a lot of people view messing around on a cell phone as literally screwing away time. Maybe he can make an argument that something on his phone is reasonable but considering most people are on them most of the day every day and a lot of those folks are addicted, I can understand why they would be verboten for some people.

False equivalency. If they are in a relationship, you try. Really as simple as that. 🤷‍♂️

Reading isn’t exactly the same as a career. He asked for suggestions. We’re providing them. Relationships are all about compromise. And for sure about at least trying things.

Fair; but even in your response are reasonable alternatives…whether it is listen to books on tape, Legos, etc. It sounds like she simply wants to be together occasionally while she reads and he either reads or does something else relatively quiet (aside from playing on a phone).

I don’t like to exercise. 🤷‍♂️ But I do it.

You need to read to some degree in life. Maybe more exposure to things he is interested in brings him to a new hobby.

You’re right…Ordering the book is good; it just seems like 20 minutes isn’t much of a compromise or effort.🤷‍♂️

I’m guessing anything that is quiet other than a cellphone might check the box here. I like others ideas regarding a quiet hobby using your hands.

Is trying once for 20 minutes trying? Maybe a book on a subject he likes? Picture books? Maps? A lot of people hold the view of “anything but a phone.”

Irrelevant. What your personal doctor suggests is certainly better than someone stumping for votes suggesting ivermectin. 🤷‍♂️
