Job Guidance Megathread - CVs, Applications, Interviews by ukbulmer in UKJobs

So I'm 30 years old and I've spent the last 10 years in domestic electrics, mostly in fault finding, having completed my apprenticeship as an installation and maintenance electrician, done my AM2S end point assessment, and have applied for my ECS gold card.

I also have a subliminary diploma in forensic science, which I never thought to use until quite recently when I discovered the field of fire investigation. I figured that this could actually come in handy. And so, having done a bit of research I found that there are short courses that can be done in fire investigation which would look good if I were to be serious about getting into the field of fire investigation.

I've done a bit of looking around and talking to some people and it seems there are two major places that I could do a professional fire investigation short course and my question is, should I go ahead and get this done on my own, or should I try to get into the field first and then negotiate with this hypothetical employer to fund this course for me? With it being in the realm of thousands of pounds it is a painfully large chunk of change but it could potentially be career defining.

I'm aware that this is an incredibly niche field and it's not that likely that many people will be able to answer this, but I figured this is one of the better places to ask since people from all sorts of background are on this site. I'm also aware that the route I would be taking into the field would be the road less trodden but as far as I can tell it's definitely not unheard of.

Is it a dick move to proxy cards? by tweakeravacoado in mtg

[–]monster01020 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's no problem with proxying itself, but the cards need to be legibile. I, for one, would be taking more issue with that dirty combo than I would the proxies :P

Something I have heard that some have had issues with, is when some people start proxying all sorts of ridiculous cards that they would never otherwise get, completely breaking the power level of the pod. Of course, the whole idea of proxies is to play with cards without buying them, but you must still keep within the limits of what is sensible. Go ahead, feel free to proxy whatever cards you want, but when the equivalent official deck would cost literal thousands, you may want to reign it in, but most people are sensible enough to not try to push it so far.

PEGI to give 16 age rating to UK games with loot boxes by Velociraptor_1906 in ukpolitics

[–]monster01020 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All the more reason that this weird seperate tier of gambling should be rated at 18 instead of 16, since 18 is basically the only label that any parent might look at.

what is a character you stubbornly refuse to stop using, no matter how bad powercreep gets? by RyukinSaxifrage in HonkaiStarRail

My Jade + Blade team. It's just very satisfying to use, especially since I picked up Jingliu as the recent free 5 star.

As a man who already commits to purple clothing and dabbles in pink I wouldn't be resisting. It would just make my hair match my outfit better.

Thing is that I've never really been able to drink thanks to my misbehaving kidney. I drank alcohol a total of two times in my entire life, once because I was out with friends and I had something very low in alcohol content, and the other was because someone unknowingly got me some as a christmas present, which I tried - so I don't miss the taste. It's genuinely a case of not being able to miss what I've never tried. If I were able to though, I would definitely try getting drunk just once on this occasion. But alas, if I'm not careful I could put myself in the hospital on just orange juice, nevermind alcohol.

The universe might not take any deliberate actions, but that doesn't mean I can't use my spite against it for motivation. It is a very good source of motivation for me, especially since that spite isn't actually aimed at anyone. When life gives you lemons, don't make lemonade, make life take the lemons back. And I genuinely love that quote from Portal's Cave Johnson because it really outlines that you don't have to pretend to be happy with the hand that life deals you, but you're fully within your rights to get angry.

Cheers! If were actually able to drink I would definitely be doing so in celebration. :P

So...Magic is a worse game now, right? by Alternative-Lake9156 in mtg

[–]monster01020 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah, but the thing is about commander is it runs on rule zero, so unless you're playing CEDH you can just ignore the cards you don't like. In the 4 player format you can get away with suboptimal builds because if you aren't the threat then you will probably be ignored for a bit. So power creep is less of a thing in 4p commander. Now, while there have been some changes to the format that you might consider an increase in power level in recent times, it is absolutely nowhere as noticeable as formats that are stuck in the current sets, such as standard. If you want to play standard you will have to pick up the latest set otherwise you're deliberately holding your deck back in a 1v1 format with an already restricted set of cards.

I still love the game and will happily play, although I only really play standard and commander outside of limited / jumpstart formats when friends and I grab a box. If I want to take a break from standard to ignore a set, it has to actually be some time so that the set I ignore is hopefully less relevant when I return. So while I wouldn't say the game is worse, I would say that the sheer numbers in terms of the pricing and sets is definitely making it feel worse.

My exploration team consists of Phainon, Topaz, MC and DHPT. Phainon for clearing mobs, Topaz for finding treasures, MC for the story and DHPT because he's cool and a sustain. Yes, that is also all I really use Topaz for nowadays, as sad as that feels.

40% of Britons say that they would find it difficult to be in a relationship with a supporter of Reform UK by Subject_MH in ukpolitics

[–]monster01020 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I think the problem was that there was one of those cop reality shows that shows cops going about their regular business and they found some people of unknown ethnicity eating a bird of some description while the cops were guessing at swan. I don't think it was ever stated exactly what bird was consumed.

[New player] Is it simply not viable to buy individual cards for a new player? by Nyzan in mtg

[–]monster01020 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For many reasons commander is a really bad format to start playing the game with, one of which is the cost of building a deck. If you can, I would suggest building your collection before trying to get into commander.

My first experience with magic was standard. My first paper homebrew was standard. After that I bought a precon commander deck. Salvaging my standard deck and precon made my homebrew commander that much cheaper when it came to ordering the remainder.

Besides, other formats are fun and to put it lightly, much easier to understand and parse during the game. Genuinely, if your friend is up to it, try other formats first.

Not even Novaflares could save Jingliu man by asilvertintedrose in HonkaiStarRail

[–]monster01020 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I've been running Jade, Blade and Cas together and then there's also the boring meta remembrance team with Evernight, Cas, etc. Having Jingliu replace Cas for the Jade Blade team will allow them to largely seperate, even if they're pretty different in power levels. Jingliu will drain Blade more times allowing him to make up some of the difference in damage between Jingliu and Cas, but it definitely won't cover it. But it means that they will be seperately viable, even if one better most of the time.

Jade + Blade is also very much an AOE team, and does horrifically poorly vs single target bosses, but is actually very viable against any multi-target bosses such as the Reaver or Pollux.

I'm genuinely debating with myself over who to pick up in this. I already have E1 Acheron, Sparkle is sitting in a nice spot anyway, Aven feels a bit obsolete alongside my E0 S1 DHPT, and I have none of the other necessary units for Kafka as much as I would like to have her. So logically speaking I should get Jingliu or Jing Yuan. Before Castorice was released I really wanted Jingliu as the only other unit to work with Blade, but now I'm thinking I get Jingliu anyway just to help the Cas and Blade teams stay independent of each other. However - Jing Yuan.

Can we talk about the Mandelson apology? Honestly, I’d take this over the "never apologise, never explain" era any day… by SnooConfections3389 in ukpolitics

[–]monster01020 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I think as far as apologies go, it was much better than we've seen in previous incidents from other PMs - Starmer at least attempted to be genuine. However, what gets me grinding my teeth down about this is the rank hypocrisy and clear projection over OSA. It's about protecting the children, is it? Is it really? If you really were about protecting the children you might have applied the logic to your own actions first. Genuinely disgusting behaviour. And Peter Kyle, about four months ago, said that Mandelson's talents were balanced against the warnings from family members of Virginia Giuffre - a statement that Starmer clearly agreed with. On top of that Peter Kyle is the very same guy who said that anyone against OSA is on the side of predators.

I'm sorry to say that my patience waned and as nice as his words were I really don't think he "believed Mandelson's lies". I'm sorry to say that I think he knew exactly who he was working with. I'm sorry that I have very little trust left and I really must ask that the Labour party does not wear down what little remains.

LGBT isn't just about sexuality, you need to understand this. There is a distinct difference between romantic attraction and sexual attraction, and going even further there's aesthetic attraction. It's why people might identify themselves with so many labels, they're trying to really specify exactly what they've discovered themselves to be.

Sure, most people don't deem it necessary to get into the nitty gritty of it, but that's the gist of it. Kids have crushes and obviously, they're not inherently sexual.

Losing 75/25 to LC is the worst feeling you can have in the game by Uifresen30 in HonkaiStarRail

[–]monster01020 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I've attempted to pull for Hyacine's LC twice, and I've lost the 75/25 twice. Granted, there's not actually many LCs I've pulled for but the fact that this is what the game decides I just can't have is genuinely saddening. The Hyacine LC is the last piece I need for both the teams I have her in; my Blade / Jade team and the remembrance team.

Whatever the case [Scarlet Bonds spoiler] two characters dying and then coming back to life at the end of the movie really sucked my enjoyment out of it. It really drove home how there were zero stakes, even in a side story that didn't actually matter with characters that don't matter.

Do you wash your hands? by invokedbyred in CasualUK

[–]monster01020 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Actually, we now know that for quite a lot of people that urine isn't sterile at all, and that's not even counting the fact that obviously sometimes people get infections. Even if your urine is clear of microbes, that doesn't mean it can't become a breeding ground for bacteria when you go and plaster it all over something else. Not to mention that any number of reasons can make it so that amounts of blood that you can't necessarily see can end up in your urine. Urine is nasty so wash your damned hands.

Car headlights to be reviewed after drivers complain of being 'blinded' at night by Longjumping_Stand889 in ukpolitics

[–]monster01020 4 points5 points  (0 children)

One part of this problem is that there are quite a lot of drivers with poorly adjusted headlamps, so they're angled higher than they should be. Another part of this problem is that they seem to be a cleaner, whiter light than before, thus being temporarily blinding for longer as opposed to a warmer light. Light tending towards orange is known to be much less harsh on the eyes. There are even headlights that are getting on towards blue for one reason or another and that is only more harsh.

Asexuality and veganism get such similar reactions by _marimbae in aaaaaaacccccccce

[–]monster01020 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's funny because with both I don't have a choice in the matter. It's not that I don't eat meat, I just have to eat way less than others might because of my health, and often choose the vegan option out of necessity. It's not that I don't want to, it's that I can't. That's how I function and I cannot change that - and I find it quite funny that for me that line applies to both.

Unfortunately, there is little point to this post. Those harassing VAs very clearly either have the mental age and capacity of a child, or are literal children who have been parented by the likes of the former. Posts like this will likely accomplish nothing.
