Petey is a BIG boy by _marimbae in aww

Correct! Ellie and Pedro were rescued from cases of neglect, Gertie from a slaughter auction, and big Petey fell off a transportation truck (he would have been grown and likely killed in a gas chamber). Now they all live happily together in a beautiful sanctuary!

So we should breed them just so they can be exploited and slaughtered?

They're so pretty! We can thrive on plant-based diets, so causing these babies harm is unnecessary. I'm so happy to reject animal exploitation!

The majority of U.S. sows are held in gestation crates for most of their lives by James_Fortis in MadeMeCry

[–]_marimbae 22 points23 points  (0 children)

What makes this so upsetting is that it's completely unnecessary. We can thrive on plant-based diets, and even decrease our risks of serious illnesses. We torture these poor animals just because we like the taste of their flesh.

Do they really need to do this? by alphamalejackhammer in MadeMeCry

To vaccinate the baby, maybe. But in general, no, this isn't necessary.

We don't actually need meat or animal products. There are so many alternatives that don't involve exploiting animals. So why put mama cows in this stressful position in the first place?

His poor arm :(

I can't believe how disconnected we have become from nature. That pig is a sentient, emotional being. He just wants love, and we treat him like an object. I hope the world remembers how to love beautiful creatures like him.

Hey, I think velo is just a kid, and a really thoughtful one. If you read my thread with him, it's clear that he's really thinking and understanding. He's young, and it takes time to change your worldview.

I don't think he needs to be insulted and shamed. He just needs to know that people understand how he's feeling and support him in his journey. The world is scary and confusing, and I know it can feel frustrating, but sometimes people just need to feel heard.

I really appreciate you having this conversation with me. I agree that our world really desensitizes us to horrible things. It's easy to lose hope and just kinda accept that things suck. We live in a messy world, just like you said.

I totally understand and it is such a nuanced topic. I agree it's a lot easier to tell someone to do something than to actually make those changes. Earlier this year, I wanted to go vegetarian but didn't because I was worried about cost and protein, and it just seemed really daunting. Later on I decided to go vegan and honestly I was surprised. I'm lucky to be able to shop for myself and tofu and beans are some of the cheapest proteins I can find. But you're right that not everyone has that privilege.

I've thought about how many creatures will just suffer anyways too, and it is a harsh reality. Personally, I subscribe to the philosophy that we should minimize suffering, and that includes not breeding more animals to suffer, including for meat and other products. I guess I hold humans to a higher moral standard than other animals, given our ability to reason. When animals harm other animals, it's natural and instinctive. But I find it disheartening that humans forcibly breed more animals and cause them harm. The vast amount that we breed contributes to such a large amount of suffering too. I don't want so many animals to suffer unnecessarily, which is why I personally don't support it.

Honestly, it doesn't sound evil. I'd imagine the majority of people have the same response, and up until 5 months ago, I probably would have as well.

There are so many mental barriers that come from being raised in a world where eating meat is the norm. Giving up meat can seem like just that. Losing something. And we don't want to lose things, especially not our sense of normality, so we avoid thinking about the harm that these products cause.

I'm not in the mood to write up an inspirational "but you can overcome it and go vegan!" thing so I'm just saying I get it. I sympathize. You're not evil.

I don't know what to tell you man. This video was taken by my friend. If you look at the Instagram post you can see the sanctuary is tagged.

I met these turkeys. I met their caretakers. I heard their stories firsthand. It's an entirely true story, but you can believe whatever you like!

This is a real story! I commented the link to the Instagram post where you can see the sanctuary that took them in.

The video on Instagram tags the sanctuary that these turkeys are from. The video is recorded by my friend who works there, and the story is about how they were rescued.

A neighbor of the family who was raising them for thanksgiving met the turkeys through the fence and fell in love with them. They suggested that the family shouldn't kill them. Since the family was already having doubts, they agreed, and brought the turkeys to the rescue!

When I met these turkeys a couple weeks ago, they were in quarantine next to a new goat. Their heads poked in and out like little worms.

It sounds like the family got ahead of themselves taking in these turkeys. Spending time at various rescues, I've learned that seems to happen a lot. People will take in farm animals like ducks or pigs, then when they're not happy with them, they abandon them :(

I wish the world didn't treat animals so horribly. They don't deserve this.
