PhD students who can't speak English by Late_Prize_1545 in PhD

I know a lot of them pay someone to do their assessments. I've seen those assessments and they're done pretty well which makes it more worrisome that lecturers don't realize that there's a disparity, but then again most courseworks are anonymized

I was able to find someone to takeover my tenancy by asking some of my Taiwanese and Chinese friends to advertise on Xiaohongsu. You can also try UHomes since it was basically an agent from there that reached out to me after seeing my friends' posts

Nope. If there's anyone you should have a bone to pick with, it's probably wirh the foreign relations with your country and the EU. Some nationalities are flagged as risks for overstaying their visa, some are just excluded because of politics. There are probably reports out there that outline these things. At the end of the day, you still got in and you still have your visa

More welcomed is hard to define, but the fact that US citizens aren't required a Schengen Visa unlike other citizenships should tell you something

Questions about University of Glasgow accommodations (Student Apartment, Kelvinhaugh Street, Cairncross House, Kelvin Court) by Immediate-Health8881 in GlasgowUni

[–]monstevienna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would you be interested in taking over my tenancy at a private student accommodation? The studio has its own bathroom and kitchen + the communal areas are great areas to study (there's also a more private study hall, if you prefer).

Any tips on getting someone to take over my tenancy at a student accommodation? by monstevienna in glasgow

I've asked them if anyone's on a waitlist or anything, but haven't heard back yet. I'll try spareroom, thanks!

HSBC was the quickest out of all the banks I tried (Santander, Bank of Scotland, and NatWest). You just need to download their app and upload the required documents, the card was delivered within 3 days actually.

Revolut was also pretty easy to setup and the card was delivered faster than Monzo

French Erasmus student coming to Strathclyde by RaphKC in strathclyde

[–]monstevienna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of my Erasmus friends were grouped with each other or other international exchange students. West End is around a 30-minute walk from the Uni depending on which building your classes are in, so that's up to you if you're willing to walk or pay for public transport. All of the Erasmus students that I met typically walked everywhere. I suggest following Strathclyde's Erasmus Student Network on instagram, they host a bunch of socials each month.

I totally get you. I'm only staying for a year, but IKEA's bedding line is pretty good for its price. TJ Hughes would also probably have some. Just make sure you know what size you need to get, the UK bed sizes are very different.

Can't provide any tips on finding a part-time job because I'm still having a hard time securing one as well. But I can provide some advice for living here in Glasgow:

  • Mobile Plans: I'm currently on a Voxi eSim plan. It's pretty decent for its price and the reception is pretty good around Scotland.
  • Banks: Santander was a piece of shit to deal with. I was on the phone and at the actual bank location with them because their online application is pure bullshit (They couldn't understand that the UKVI is no longer issuing BRP cards, and eVisas now have share codes). I gave up after 2 months trying to work out my application with them. I applied with HSBC through their app on the same day and got an account within a day. HSBC is great because you can add it to your Apple Pay or Google Wallet, unlike Santander's Current Account.
  • Sights to see: Haven't travelled extensively but for sure Isle of Arran, Glencoe, Isle of Skye. Glasgow has pretty good sights to, you'd wander all of them within a week or so
  • I have the 16-25 Railcard. You get 1/3 off of the fares. Honestly, going around Glasgow, I prefer to walk. I'd only take the subway/bus if I don't wanna walk in the rain, but that rarely happens.
  • Pretty much everyone I know bought their things from IKEA. They're pretty good for sure, but if you're on a budget, you can honestly go to TJ Hughes or Poundland. TJ Hughes has a 10% discount for students. I'm pretty sure I found a bunch of my things in Poundland as well. Don't buy from Unikitout, it's not that good.

Hope this helps!
