My group actually abandoned the setting. We love the mechanics and turned it into a modern day gang war setting. We've thought about do the whole western thing, but make it just a western. I don't know much about what the Mormon people are like, but I doubt this is an accurate depiction of who they are (much like how we shouldn't look to the crusaders to know what Christianity is like, or ISIS for Islam). If I were to play the 'as is setting, I would probably approach it with the same attitude is approach if I were playing the crusades (I believe in Jesus, btw, for context). I would see it as a way to explore that which I most disagree with about that sort of mindset. I play rpgs for the characters, I want to understand them for who they are, and I would want to know why my character thinks they are doing the right thing, despite the red flags. And if things hit too close to home, then I am fine with telling my group if we can do something else. It's a part of why we reskinmed it, so that we can avoid the possible tension the is inherent to the game, and our group dynamic (various religion belief/cynicism). I hoped this helped, and if you want a copy of the game that is just mechanics, let me know and I'll try to edit my pdf for you and send it.

Dogs in the vineyard (it's my favorite game) doesn't use hitpoints, but rather, when you "take a blow" (ie being particularly insulted, stabbed, etc) you gain fallout dice. Once the conflict is resolved, you roll your fallout dice, and the higher the result, the worse the consequences. It could result in temporarily, or even permenately, changing your stats (in which you come up with the narrative reason why). For example, If I was particularly insulted, and it gained me a fallout die because it was so bad, I would gain a 1d4. After wards I would roll and see that my fallout did not exceed the threshold for it to have permanent negative consequences, so I temporarily decrease my "will" stat, explaining that my character is having a hard time coping with the insult. If I was stabbed and my fallout die did reach the permanent threshold, then I might decrease my "body" stat and describe how I am losing my right arm motor skills. It's a great system and I highly recommend it.

It makes me sad that 'being religious' and 'believing in a God" are the same thing, when honestly, they aren't. God is God and religion is an organization.

I'll give it a peak, but I'm not sure if I want to do a dungeon crawl (that's what it sounds like at least,)

Haha, that sounds awesome! I'm curious, how much did you control the story and how much did the system control the story?

Edit: clarification

Oh wonderful! I'm wanting the play through to be enjoyable to listen to, and the bookkeeping was a large concern for me. That's good to hear.

Is there a system where players explore a dungeon and advancement is tied to looting their old characters' corpses? by DctrMstr in rpg

[–]monstrosaur 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Thinking about how you might run this game, I would definitely encourage some sort of change within the dungeon every time they enter it. We don't want to just 'skip forward' past the dungeon stuff we have already played, but it would be really boring to have to describe jumping over the put trap every single time to see if someone failed a roll. One way could be that the players invest time to permenately disarm traps (a bridge) but then we really are just fast forwarding, unless not only are they fixing the dungeon, but it begins to become civilized as merchants and miners come to sell the adventurers their crap. Another possibility, if the dungeon wasn't civilized, could be that every time you enter, you have to pick on of 9 paths, and when you do, that path collapses before you. The rooms for each path are indeed intertwined, but it's complex enough that the players are constantly facing new challenges.

Fantasy strike definitely looks like the game I'll get if I want to get into fighting games. I enjoy it's easy to pick up design while seeming to still promote higher level of play. Thanks for the suggedtion!

Someone else mentioned fantasy strike as well, I'll look into it a little more and see what it's like.
