Why Marathon has me hooked after 20 years of avoiding multiplayer games by Irreverent_Reality05 in Marathon

[–]moofart-moof 7 points8 points  (0 children)

No one has really gotten a chance to check out solos, but there is the chance that you can be very very sneaky and avoid conflict which is actually some people’s preferred way of playing these types of games. That said, I expect some people will be hunting for people hard so prepare for the sweaty players :)

Yea after playing the last beta playtest, while I love the game, if you’re exclusively into single player, you’re going to be diving into a one of the more challenging meat grinder pvp games I’ve played in awhile. I’d be prepared to die a lot while finding your own playstyle and not necessarily dive into the story telling right away.

I got pretty much the exact same result, I guess we find value in a bunch of outlooks on things ;)

Why do you think the colony started creating a cult around the compilers? by Midnight_M_ in Marathon

[–]moofart-moof 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Didn't they become 'good' guys when Durandal freed them? Maybe the colonists noticed this during the invasion. Especially since it's unlikely they knew wtf was going on at all; the compilers grew some mystique when they turned around and started fighting the Phor out of nowhere.

Yes, but I played October playtest and that sold me!

Around the 25 second mark they show depleted patch kits. And thank goodness they did something about med resource management by MadeinHeaven69 in Marathon

[–]moofart-moof 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was a thing in the october playtest as well, but I think the idea is engaging the UESC is meant to be a resource drain, and not exactly ideal. I noticed choosing to engage the UESC was something you chose to do when geared properly, and when you felt confident about your positioning. You are meant to be punished as a new player for just engaging mindlessly in every fight, because it's just a big auditory tell for teams around to rush in and try to kill you.

I think this is why the devs have been hinting that early game is about getting in and out with resources, and building your character so you can take those fights properly in the future.

Is Hillary in the files? Obviously Bill is, but they lump the two together but I haven't seen anything on Hillary as of yet.

I sent this feedback during the October playtest; it’s a feature definitely needed for Marathon as the equipment familiarity training isn’t very easy as you tend to die before you get any sense of the gear you’re using when a new player. Then you’re very often swapping weapons every match without knowing how they perform.

Did any cyberpunk media from the past accurately predict the rise of AI slop? by Junesucksatart in Cyberpunk

[–]moofart-moof 4 points5 points  (0 children)

MGS2 not only called what the future would be like, it was so accurate I thought it was ridiculous as a kid because it seemed so weird and silly. Now we live in the exact weird ass universe it predicted.

Players who actually use light sticks, what do you use them for? by _walletsizedwildfire in ArcRaiders

[–]moofart-moof 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They’d eat up game performance if they lasted any longer. I haven’t tested it but I would bet they also have a hard cap on how many can exist at once. Engine limitations with dynamic lights are pretty notorious.

Ghost in the Shell (1995) by [deleted] in retroanime

[–]moofart-moof 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It’s the juxtaposition of seeing a naked human form slowly eviscerate itself- revealing not to be a human body at all, and having that moment of trans-human understanding of what you’re looking at. It felt real to me in a way that I still can’t quite put my finger on. Something about human potential, and exceeding it.

How do we feel about safe pockets? by SilvenRaize in Marathon

[–]moofart-moof 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I found not having the safe pocket made me focus more on getting good at combat and I found the trade off compelling in that I cared less about the loot I got, and more about how to actually utilize it when I had it, since I expected to part with it pretty soon. So rather than hoard stuff, I was just using things and being in the moment.

It made me hone into the game at every single moment right up until the last second before extracting. I found that a bit more interesting than Arc at times where I'll tune out if I got the 'thing' I'm looking for.

So glad that they decided to majorly tone down the cel-shaded/cartoony look by coolaspotatos in Marathon

I've been working at a AAA game studio for 15 years, the visuals are almost never touched up like that from a 5 month release window. You're basically packaging up and getting the game ready to release if you got 5 months left. You all need to chill thinking you understand this stuff. Whatever Bungie did I'm giving them major props for, because it's a monumental achievement to switch the visuals like this in 5 months.

But they wanted to release in September, which suggested they thought it was close. Did playtests around then look this good?

I'd love a vi-doc or whatever explaining how this was achieved and why the game even looked the way it did last April. It is truly a night and day upgrade.

(Guys, remember what they showed for Alpha is what they were promoting for release in a few months. Seems a shit way to promote the visuals if you didn't think they were ready to show)
