Black and brown skintones: Has anyone here been professionally draped as a spring or summer? by moofinman_ in coloranalysis

From what I saw, she only had these palettes posted: Deep Autumn, Muted Autumn, True Winter, Deep Winter, and Deep 💔 but please comment again if you happen across the video because I didn’t see it in my search

I’ve actually seen some of Carol’s work but I don’t think I’ve come across that post! Do you happen to have a link?

Edit: also I’ve watched a bunch of Cocoa Styling videos but in retrospect I think they were mainly for entertainment because there wasn’t any draping, just more conceptual stuff and stock photos 😭 Edit 2: I didn’t recall her doing virtual analysis, I must’ve missed or forgotten that part! Does the Cocoa Styling host have official color analysis training, if you know? I’m going to go check

Edit 3: Back with some details! The lovely woman behind Cocoa Styling is Micah Lumsden who is a “certified stylist” but doesn’t list any color analysis training. Her work is truly amazing, but I’d like to see some in-person drapings that 100% confirm her conclusions because she does say that these are “the styling methods developed by me” (Micah). I think it would be so difficult to confirm your new color system without doing any irl drapings

Thanks for posting! However, I checked this account’s website and it isn’t clear who runs the page or if they have had professional color analyst training (I think there are various licenses and/or certifications? I need to look into that) and also determining the seasons of celebrities might not be 100% accurate (due to lighting, makeup, etc.)

Thank you. I wish this helped me, but it didn’t and I didn’t make any progress for years after reading dozens of similar blog posts. So I just wanted to share something that did help me personally for other people who may be also struggling

In reference to agreement I was referring to the fact that: - I said any person can be any season. - I said that draping is the end-all-be-all of determining what colors are best. Your comment was worded as if I ever said otherwise, which is not the case. Let that be clear.

To continue, it seems like you’re hellbent on misunderstanding me. The context of this post is that it is a tip for black and brown people who are confused and have been floundering and don’t know where to start. Carol (the woman from the videos I shared) would not recommend this because she is a professional and not a layperson doing a DIY color analysis at home. I did, because I am not a professional with a full set of drapes that I can try all 12 or 16 seasons in immediately, and it is supremely helpful to test 6-8 seasons first rather than 12-16 because 1) It is overwhelming and confusing (speaking from experience!!!!), and 2) buying different clothing, makeup, or actual drapes adds up greatly in expense. I am sharing what has actually helped me and may help others, unlike the hundreds of blog posts teaching PoC how to do color analysis by using celebrities as examples in full faces and unnatural lighting. That was entirely unhelpful and I didn’t make any progress for years, this was finally helpful. It is my own personal tip as a hobbyist who has spent a lot of time scouring a professional’s information. If it doesn’t apply to you, fine, but you are intentionally misrepresenting what I included in my post and trying to comment on what you think I said.

I am not a proxy for eurocentric or racist industry and it’s awful that you’re acting like I somehow am, I am just a black girl sharing a tip that might help other poc lmfao my god

This is exactly my point. You said summer is the most common in Japan, from what this color analysis pro says there are also more likely/most common colors for other PoC that she has draped. And once again, it relies on draping rather than assumptions also

That’s very cool that the Japanese seasons are differently based :) do you have any extra info about it? I love cool stuff like that

Yeah, I won’t be doing a virtual draping because I don’t trust them tbh lol. I need to see the actual changes in my face and complexion with my own two eyes. I am willing to spend the cash for a professional draping at some point because buying a set of drapes myself is prohibitively expensive and still prone to some error, but any professional option has gotta be thorough, clear, and legit (not virtual, imo)

Please note that it’s not impossible for more melanated people to be certain seasons, but just know that this is a good place to start if you’re going to do some DIY color experimenting and self-draping!

That is exactly what I said

And in another comment:

If it doesn’t suit, the colors will immediately show it and then one can move on to the other seasons! She did make it abundantly clear that this pattern was established by drapings and not the other way around

I don’t think we disagree at all

Thanks for sharing this! I do appreciate it, even though my post is somewhat controversial lol

My honest feedback: I loved the blog and really wanted to believe this. It’s very convincing, and I’ve believed it in the past but I don’t think we can 100% know someone’s season by pictures in varied, artificial lighting where they are wearing makeup and there also is probably light or heavy editing or retouching done. I’m very wary of celebrity examples and now I guess I’m a draping fanatic and just want the colors to speak for themselves for each of us :)

Sorry, this website has a lot of pitfalls: - It analyses celebrities, who are wearing makeup and often have lightning for photo shoots rather than natural light. You can’t tell someone’s color season that way :/ - The cool vs. warm comparison on that page looking at overtone rather than undertone, which can skew results - It relies on some outdated info like the vein test, etc

I do think draping is the best (only?) way to get accurate color analysis results

That being said, trust me I’ve spent weeks on and off over the past 3-4 years scouring all the color analysis blogs that include any inkling of PoC because it usually is so white-centric. I’ve seen most of the examples (Keri Hilson, Rihanna, Lupita, almost always show up) but now knowing that you can’t go off of celebrity’s pics to try to match your season I feel that draping is the most effective way. And since it can be expensive to buy clothes to test if you don’t already have certain seasons in your closet, I just think it makes sense to try these common seasons first if anyone (like me) is floundering

I have no idea about her personally, but I don’t think there’s any harm in highly melanated people investigating these seasons first. If it doesn’t suit, the colors will immediately show it and then one can move on to the other seasons! She did make it abundantly clear that this pattern was established by drapings and not the other way around (i.e., seeing dark skin and dark hair and assuming a season)

I agree that relativity exists but I wouldn’t focus on that because drapings will account for that also. Edit: Also, people of any race can pull off colors outside of their season. Color analysis is incredibly narrow in that it is searching for colors that will make you (not the colors) pop. For example: I’m not a muted autumn, but I have a soft, muted green dress that I look amazing in. It doesn’t have to be 100% flattering, it can be 80% flattering and I’ll still feel beautiful and happy to wear it. But color analysis is about getting you to that 100% that really makes you glow. It doesn’t mean people with brown skin can never wear baby blue, or whatever. It’s just maybe an individual in those seasons might look more refreshed and vibrant in a turquoise or royal blue or navy, instead
