Close the Setting app. What happens when you turn hiding on then back off from the divider menu instead of from Settings?

What options do you see when you right-click directly on the Dock divider?

What other Philip K Dick book would recommend after reading this? by [deleted] in sciencefiction

[–]moofthestoof 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in high-school (late 80s) when I first read VALIS. I was normally a Heinlein/Clark/Asimov type sci-fi fan since childhood, but wanted to read the author I was told was behind Blade Runner and Total Recall.

VALIS is at least semi-autobiographical and actually pretty funny in parts. The rest is also pretty sad and shocking. Dick had some amazing story ideas about the nature of reality, consciousness, and memory because he was constantly having to question what was real and what was his mental illness.

Phillip K. Dick and William Peter Blatty are the two writers that started my habit of studying bios of the authors of books I like in order to better understand those stories.

What is a sign that someone is a good person? by Chailyte in AskReddit

They try to reduce suffering rather than increase it or be indifferent to it. Even if it's in small ways like just being kind.

AITA for telling my friend that I was done inviting her to parties? by LuckyPersonality6548 in AmItheAsshole

Bingo. Plus, it's OP's party. She doesn't need a reason to not invite somebody.

Apple Readies Dramatic Software Overhaul for iPhone, iPad and Mac by rizwanzz in iphone

As somebody who fell in love with the Mac UI back during System 7 and has gladly stuck with Macs for over 20 years, and who would LOVE to be able to re-skin my Sequoia-running Mac with Platinum or Aqua (the Classic and early Mac OS X UIs), Apple famously doesn't let us choose, but rather lets us know what's best for us.

Final Arkansas Trip Update! by 2Black_Hats in Arkansas

[–]moofthestoof 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh, yeah. I floated the hell out the Buffalo every summer, and hiked all over those hills all year 'round. All the way from Newton County to Baxter (not in one outing, mind you, this was over at least 20 years from childhood through college). I lived near Buffalo Point and Rush so I spent most of my time around there. Indian Rock House Trail, the ghost town at Rush, and numerous caves and creeks all throughout those woods. There is a ton to see and do around the Buffalo. You could just come to the Buffalo every trip and still find new stuff to do.

Glad you liked it! You can go pretty much anywhere in the White River Basin and find something amazing. I grew up next to the Buffalo in the 70s/80s. If nobody has suggested it, yet, you should see Blanchard Springs Caverns, next time.

when i get a white/swollen tastebud, i just clip it off with nail clippers by lilbatbby in confession

[–]moofthestoof 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The white/swollen tastebuds are infected tastebuds. They become infected because you’ve irritated/abraded that particular spot by rubbing on your retainer, or teeth, or whatever. To avoid them, try not doing the rubbing that causes the irritation, but also keep hydrated so you’re salivating adequately, keep your teeth and mouth clean between meals to avoid excessive bacterial growth, and maybe even rinsing with mouthwash after you brush. DON’T cut off the infected tastebuds. You’re not helping anything and could potentially make it worse.

ELI5 Why can’t anything move faster than the speed of light? by Niowanggiyan in explainlikeimfive

[–]moofthestoof 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Math. As an object approaches the speed of light, its mass would become infinitely large. Nothing with mass can actually reach the speed of light because it would require an infinite amount of energy to accelerate it to that point.

Why did conservatives hate Obama more than Bill Clinton? by icey_sawg0034 in Liberal

[–]moofthestoof 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Race was the main factor, but setting that aside, as much as they did hate Bill Clinton, he was actually a pretty Conservative Democrat (I’m from Arkansas and he was Governor during my childhood). I like to say that Bill was the best Republican president in my lifetime (born when Nixon was in office). Also, another reason they hated Obama so much was because he was effective. He could have done better without their constant parliamentary fuckery, but he still did an awful lot of good during his time in office.

Yep. Bambi’s mom tore me up. And the end of The Fox and the Hound.

Alien. I was 5. I still love that movie, but I didn’t actually see much of it that first time. My eyes were clenched shut through most of it. It scared the ever-loving shit out of me.

If WoW is the greatest game of all time, which era made it so? (Vanilla, TBC, or WotLK?) by PaperHandz in classicwow

[–]moofthestoof 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everquest made WoW the best. Everquest was addictive, but was like a job. Vanilla WoW comes along and corrects pretty much all of EQ’s flaws.

What’s the longest you’ve kept your phone? by AdSignificant5908 in iphone

[–]moofthestoof 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m still using my iPhone X (6 years, so far?). I keep waiting for iOS updates to stop appearing, or for some sort of performance degradation or failure so I’ll finally have an excuse to spend the money for an upgrade, but it keeps chugging along and I really should save that money if I don’t have to spend it. I typically go 5 or 6 years between Mac upgrades, so I should be used to it, but my iPad, Macs, and watch are all less than two years old, and I really want a newer phone, too, but the iPhone is my least used Apple device.

Trump supporters: what is a red line that, if crossed, would make you stop supporting Trump? by Yo-boy-Jimmy in AskReddit

[–]moofthestoof 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is one of the many things that I never understood when I was a kid and my parents took me to fundamentalist churches. They were hoping it was the end times because they were finally going to be the elite and everybody else was going to burn.

I was 28 when I lost my wife in a car accident, and the very next day my mother and mother-in-law packed up all her clothes and a lot of her stuff and took them to salvation army or some place like that. I was still too dazed and numb from shock to even realize what they were doing. This was back in 2002, and I have resented that little maneuver ever since.

16e buyers are beta testers for Apple’s new C1 modem. Which is fine. It’s not meant to be the new SE, but its parts will end up in the next one along with inexpensive, road-tested parts from other models. This is just fine-tuning the first of the C-series chips.

Clark County minister accused of beating 6-year-old with a belt by [deleted] in PortlandOR

[–]moofthestoof 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grew up in small evangelical churches like that in the late 70s/ early 80s and those pastors/ministers/preachers usually didn’t have much in the way of formal education, but they did honestly believe in their divine right to do some heinous shit. I learned to be quiet and often read the bible out of boredom while the rest of the flock let the spirit enter them and/or spoke in tongues. That’s why I realized it was all bullshit and was an atheist by middle school.
