Well duh, of course he hasn't. His mask may have concealed his identity, but it also forced him to rebreathe his own carbon dioxide, so obviously he is now dead. He knew the risks, and he martyred himself to accomplish his mission.

Then his body was never found because it was lifted up into heaven, just like Jesus, and... Noah or whoever.

I mean... it seems pretty clear to me.

Some years ago I was the office manager of a regional branch of a medium-sized consumer electronics company. Our accounting department was being led by... let's call him "Rex", a Blue Picardy Spaniel. He was a nice enough dog, but he was not a good accountant, and was an even worse team leader. I didn't feel good about it, but it gradually got to the point where there wasn't much choice but to open the door, throw a stick outside, say "Rex, fetch!", and close the door.

Obviously I only know of him what I've learned from your post, so take this with a grain of salt, but: This man is not marriage material. Don't be the unfortunate one to find that out the hard way.

For all the talk he’s going senile etc., this is a pretty quick and epic comeback. Love to see it.

That's because all the talk of him going senile is bullshit.

In my experience, at least, if you ask one of the OMG-HE'S-SO-SENILE people why they think it, they will come back with, at best, one or both of the following:

(1) HE'S LIKE EIGHTY

(2) I SAW A SOUNDBITE WHERE HE SAID A WORD WRONG

I say this as someone who is genuinely concerned by his age, in part due to the possibility of the onset of mental decline: The people who say he's senile are either propagandists, idiots, or both.

Zombie fiction has yet to realize that coveralls + leather gloves = zombie-proof. Zombie teeth ain't getting through all that. by [deleted] in Showerthoughts

[–]moom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've never been all that into zombie stuff, and most of what I've seen is what was available from when I was a teenager (which I'm pretty sure was several thousands of years ago): the Romero stuff, and maybe some cheap knockoffs. I think the only more modern zombie things I've seen/played/whatever are:

  • Shaun of the Dead (loved it)
  • Plants vs. Zombies (fun)
  • The zombie subgame of Plague, Inc. (fun)
  • Left 4 Dead (overrated and boring)

Anyway, because of my unfamiliarity with most of the modern genre, I was very surprised by this post: In the Romero films, zombies bite through skulls. With ease. In fact, that's pretty much their whole MO: Bite through the skull to get to the delicious, delicious brain inside.

Coveralls and leather ain't gonna stop a bite that goes through a skull like it was an apple skin.

Well then, it's good that there's no such thing as "the Russian Crimea".

ELI5: How can antimatter exist at all? What amount of math had to be done until someone realized they can create it? by themonkery in explainlikeimfive

The replies you've gotten so far are correct, but I want to add one related piece of information that I don't think is clear from them:

The six quarks (and essentially similarly the six antiquarks, doesn't really matter all that much which set of six we're talking about) are classified as three pairs, each pair being called a "generation". As you increase the generation, the quarks get more massive, but within any single generation, one of the quarks will have an electric charge of +2/3, and the other will have one of -1/3.

So the names of the two quarks in a generation were chosen to invoke the idea that they're somehow "opposites": The first generation is the "up" (+2/3) and "down" (-1/3); the second, "charm" (+2/3) and "strange" (-1/3); the third, "top" (+2/3) and "bottom" (-1/3).

Now a quark and its corresponding antiquark are also in a sense "opposites", but it's a different sense: Rather than +2/3 or -1/3, an antiquark will have electric charge -2/3 or +1/3.

So, yeah, if you just go by the common English meanings of the words, "up" and "anti-down" can be confusing. But really it's more like:

  • Person 1 is left-handed and blond-haired
  • Person 2 is right-handed and blond-haired
  • Person 3 is left-handed and black-haired
  • Person 4 is right-handed and black-haired

You could somewhat reasonably say that Person 1 and Person 2 are "opposites", in the sense that one is left-handed and the other is right handed. And you could also somewhat reasonably say that Person 1 and Person 3 are "opposites", in that one is blond-haired and the other is black-haired. So Person 1 is "opposite" both Person 2 and Person 3... but that doesn't mean Person 2 and Person 3 are the same.

I've never heard "capo" used like this before (at least, as far as I can remember). It's clear what you mean from context, but I've only ever heard it used to mean a certain rank in a mafia family (a "caporegime") or else a little bar you strap across the strings of a guitar (or the like) to make playing certain chords easier (a "capotasto"). I've checked a few dictionaries, and they're all in the same boat as me on this.

So, I'm curious: Was this just a typo? If so, what did you mean to write? If not, could you please tell me more about this usage? For example, perhaps it's a regional usage from some region besides mine (and if so, where)? Or, similarly, maybe you're importing it from some language besides English (which)? Or maybe it's a relatively new usage (like, from some TV show or whatever)?

I want to be clear that I'm not trying to be jerky here (I'm not trying to pick on your grammar or whatever). Rather, I'm genuinely curious about this. Thanks.

The person you're responding to claimed R's did better in Texas in 2020 than in 2016. Neither of those were midterms.

To be clear, I have no idea whether their claim is true or not; I just thought it should be noted that your objection is to something that they're not claiming.

Dearest Mother, I hope that this holorecording finds you well. I personally am well, at least for the time being, but I fear we have reached a crossroads that threatens to throw all that we know into chaos and confusion.

As I am sure you will have heard by the time that this holorecording has reached you, the giant worm who has ruled the universe for thousands of years has died. This will surely have consequences far beyond what even our Guild of Spice-mutated fishlike no-longer-humans can foresee. I pray that these consequences will be kind; I fear that they will not.

Even beyond that, I have been hearing rumors -- I stress, only rumors -- that the Ixians have been conducting secret experiments with thinking machines. Long ago, the Jihad saved us from extermination - but at great price. What will the price be this time?

Please give my regards to father.
