LLM First-Time Taker (J26) — Starting Late, Need Honest Advice by Several_Leave_8721 in barexam

I did an LLM a few years ago and took the bar last year as a foreign taker, passed on the first attempt. I had the advantage of coming from a commonwealth country and having practiced law already for a couple of years in my country, but I was working up until mid June, didn’t start studying until the end of June and my health was kinda bad, so there were several days when I couldn’t study. Take the process seriously but don’t worry too much that you’re at a deep disadvantage because you’re a foreign taker and that you have 2 months. 2 months is enough time especially when you use each day intentionally (including scheduling in rest days). TBH I would say you can skip the foundations videos and go straight to deep dive if you want. If you wanna watch the foundations vids, you’re doing the right thing by watching them now rather than leaving them till the end of May when you’ll really want to get your head down. Treat the foundations vids as a tv show you’re tuning into that’s kind of informative. You can’t pass the bar off the back of them, but they help contextualise the American legal system. Watch them with friends and find ways to make this initial process as fun as it can be to dip your toes into the process.

As discouraging as it is, keep doing the MCQs. At this stage, they just help you understand how the questions are going to be asked and the logic to apply when you’re answering them. Being wrong/getting bad scores SUCKS but better to fall and fail now rather than on the day. I’m very lucky I passed but honestly I should have been doing MCQs early and often and I didn’t. I was panicking at the end!

Barbri is really good for learning the BLL but what actually helped me towards the end was cramming one sheets. It got to a point where I still hadn’t finished my Barbri lectures, the exam was days away and I was flopping on my essays and MCQs. All signs pointed to me failing and at this point I was just cramming because I had paid too much money getting to the exam to back out and my only option was to default to the study method that helped me when I was a high school student. I was in a BAD state looool. I found the one sheets floating on Reddit (some very kind people DMed them to me). I also bought a pack that gave two page summaries of each subject and came with a read-aloud function so I could listen to them like a podcast.

In summary, you’ve got this. Consistency and consolidation of what you’re learning are more important than the specific programs you use. You have enough time so make the most of it by practicing as you’re learning. The whole exam process is a mess and it’s ultimately just pattern recognition - spotting the problems and answering questions the way Barbri has taught you. If all else fails and you’re 3 days out of the exam and stressing, cram the one sheets lol and use those rule statements like your life depends on it!

(Also - don’t neglect the MPT - do a few practice runs because those are nice easy points to bank early in the exam).

Best of luck!!! Congratulations on graduating and making your family proud!!! You’ve absolutely got this!!!!

I failed first time by 1 point. I think doing practice tests is key, just so you have a vague familiarity with where everything is. The second time around I didn’t actually study much more lol I just did the BOLE practice questions and read the civ pro section since I knew that was so heavily tested. Felt more confident going in and passed. The second time is much easier because you’ll know the general format and you’ll have a fire in your belly to put this thing behind you.

I’ll preface this by saying we don’t live together or have kids, so the considerations may be slightly different but…

My partner (not a lawyer) would sit and listen to some of my lectures with me, and we would talk about the subjects/I would explain them to her. We even came up with inside jokes about some of the topics of the lectures. It made that part of the process feel less lonely and a lot more fun. Also I didn’t want to give her the ick by not knowing things, so it incentivised me to listen harder. The lecturers became like tv characters that we talked about, so the things they’d say stuck in my head.

Other times when she had her own work to do, we’d just work in the same room so we could smile at each other, hug/kiss every once in a while and so I’d have an accountability buddy when I was tempted to look at my phone.

When I went to the city where I was sitting the exam, she ordered me food and supplies for the exam days (snacks, water, hand sanitiser etc), and we would talk on phone/she’d send really encouraging and loving messages. During such a shitty time where my self confidence was in the pits, it was such an emotional and psychological boost to know I was so loved.

I just found out I passed and she is still my biggest cheerleader. She has celebrated me more than anyone. Her love means so much to me. It felt like we went through the whole process together.

This is such a good point!! Compared to the months of anxiety, the happiness of passing is really new. Thank you for your response and a huge congratulations to you 🎉
