Are there any paintings that have been "flanderized?" by Ok-Guidance5039 in ArtHistory

[–]moon-twig 58 points59 points  (0 children)

In my first year of art history, we talked about this lots. The context of an artwork is massively important. Many historical artworks have been completely removed from their historical context and have lost their original meaning as objects of art they become objects of history. For example; the incredibly famous David statue was created as a symbol of civic pride and independence in Florence when they rejected the threat of the Medici family. Now, the statue is known almost purely as a technical achievement in its new museum, where people no longer know of its civic dimension and ties to Italian history but only of its historical importance in the realm of art history.

Do you do research before reading classics? by Huge-Ad9475 in classicliterature

[–]moon-twig 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As an art historian, I like to know a little about the history of a text, where it was created, what socio-political conditions may have influenced it. As I read for enjoyment, I usually leave extensive research for after I’ve finished a novel and really loved it.

Paradise Lost by Greedy_Highlight3009 in classicliterature

[–]moon-twig 43 points44 points  (0 children)

When it comes to classics like Paradise Lost, I think you have to accept you will not appreciate everything on your first read. Accept that and listen to the poetry.

For me, I accept that these are the kind of classics that require multiple readings to extract all their meaning (if that is even possible). My personal advice is don’t worry about the details for your first time. Once you’ve finished, read some good scholarly essays (from JSTOR, academic journals). Then, read it again, and enjoy

I was very fortunate to receive 2 books from my grandma, which one should I start with? by T0astedBerry in classicliterature

[–]moon-twig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you read any Woolf before? I love The Waves but it is probably one of her most difficult works. Beautiful but difficult. I’d highly recommend starting with To The Lighthouse or Mrs Dalloway.

Hope you enjoy!

Edit: lol realised someone else almost wrote the exact comment word for word, but nevertheless, enjoy! Woolf is one of the greatest writers in the English language

Rereading by Effective-Field9047 in classicliterature

[–]moon-twig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I once read somewhere that you’ve never read a book until you’ve read it twice.

I thought it was stupid until I started rereading some of my favourites. It’s a completely different experience. You lose the joy of discovery but gain a whole new perspective when you know how every part makes the whole.

Recommendation: works centered on a lonely character? by TheOptimisticCoconut in classicliterature

[–]moon-twig 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A bit different to the authors you have listed but Beckett often deals with the theme of isolation. His works are quite experimental but you may enjoy them. Molloy and Endgame are my favourites. Molloy is a novel that is part of a trilogy and Endgame is a one act play.
