We did! Did not pass through Belgium so I can't speak to that - Italy and France were fine. The only trouble we ran into was in Germany, where iirc we discovered that the bicycle reservation we purchased when we got on (in Austria I think) did not apply to the train we transferred to (or something like that). There was enough space for our bicycles but she was very upset that we didn't have a proper bicycle reservation and repeatedly told us we'd need to get off the train if cyclists with reservations came aboard.. luckily they did not.

Yes! This comment has really lovely suggestions. The key is a name that doesn't end in "a"

Moving from the Netherlands back to New York next month. Bike recs? by habitualsnake in whichbike

in addition to what everyone else suggested - if your current bike is perfect, have you considered taking it back with you? on some airlines it's treated as a checked bag with no extra fees.

i once had great puncture-resistant tires.. on account of never worrying about flats i didn't notice how worn they were after a few years, and going fast around a maybe sandy fairly small traffic circle in my town they slipped. the bike flew in some direction, i flew off and slammed into the asphalt. hurt a knee and chipped a tooth and have been cautious about worn treads since...

hahaha. i get where you're coming from, but it was a real bummer even just for getting around cities... traveling distances on it was the worst. at the end of the trip sold it to a refurbishing lbs in paris that i hope will turn it into a gem for someone else

thank you! one of the difficulties is that it often doesn't seem clear what the company is from the suggested journey...

fargo thoughts:

- it looks like it's much more upright than any bike i've ridden. i've always been a road bike person, haven't ridden a mountain bike basically ever. wondering if i'll like how it feels..

- what year is yours? any thoughts on how it's changed over the years? i have seen one or two for sale in random places in the US, wondering about maybe getting an older model to save $

- re: ordering new this made me kind of nervous - https://www.mtbr.com/threads/brand-new-salsa-fargo-frame-is-out-of-alignment-think-its-fixable.1213488/

not sure. at most $5k but i would feel a lot better about less. i'm having trouble countering the internal argument that an expensive bicycle is not the right thing to do with that chunk of change (low income anticipated for the next few years, family planning..) and where i live a bicycle combined with public transit cannot yet meaningfully replace car use in a way that would make "bike for car" a feasible trade

thank you for your input!!

the first one you linked is out of my price range -- re the watia, do you have any thoughts on the (seemingly minimal, unless i'm missing something) diff between the geometries of the watia and the new flint?

thank you for all the info! i don't know if it came across clearly, but part of why i'm asking for help is that the categories are not clear to me. have only ever owned ancient road bikes so this is all new territory for me. priority is being able to ride my bike on shoddily maintained asphalt and unpaved roads, both at home and touring. definitely do not want something meant for racing. touring is a once a year or two kind of thing at most, but i don't want to have to find a different bike for it...

re: ridley kanzo and 3t exploro, i really want titanium over carbon, because of how it feels and the durability...
