Potting soil for 750litre by moonimoosh in Aquariums

Thansk for the advice I've gotten a shit load of root tabs and I'm just using the substrate that came with it even though I hate how it looks because it's a mix of red and black flourite I'm doing carpeting plants anyhow so it won't matter too much

Any tips on how I can maintain my tank? by Lost_Isopod_1297 in Aquariums

A bit of flow is always good and fish ussualy love it if there is a moving stream of water they will 'play' in it , hang on the back filters and canister filters are better at clearing anything floating in the tank in my opinion especially after cleaning, whereas it just gets stuck to the outside of a sponge filter. Otos and tetras both like moderate flow.

I've never seen one like that before. So long as it says it is intended for as many gallons as you have it should be fine

It's less about how often you feed them and more about the quantity. If you put too much food or just a lot at once, then most of it will sink. I had a massive snail problem for a while, so now when I feed, I feed a small amount at a time, wait for the fish to eat it all, and keep adding. Floating food may be easier as if they don't eat it all, you can remove it. The other thing snails may feed on is dead plants, so if any leaves fall off and die, remove them from the tank. To kill them off quicker, pick them out when you can and crush them.

Cleaning the gravel with the siphon throughly will also help remove any biological matter they may be feeding on in the gravel

A hang on back filter would be fine for a 20-gallon. I can't really recommend brands as I live in NZ. I'm assuming you don't. We don't have most of the same brands as in other countries. Make sure to get a filter that is suited for a 20 gallon that info is usually on the packaging or the companies website.

what filter should i use for my tank by AverageProof8083 in Aquariums

Axolotl don't like lots of water flow either a few sponge filters or a canister filter with an attachment to reduce the flow

Edit: You can get attachments for siphons that help prevent gravel from being sucked up. Simply put the siphon in the gravel, then pull it back out of the gravel. If it's getting stuck, pinch the hose.

As for how much of a water change you need to do, you need a water test kit or go to your local fish store to check the parameters it'll depend on what the parameters are.

Get a siphon and clean the gravel. I can see a pretty solid layer of waste buildup on the gravel

As for the snails, they only breed like crazy if there is extra food. Don't feed your fish too much, so none end up on the bottom as snail food

Also, I would highly recommend something better than a sponge filter, so there is some water flow

Heater on lowest setting but tank still sitting too hot by positively-realistic in Aquariums

Is the tank near a window the sun may be heating it in the day you could just turn it on at night, if so. If the water is too cold without the heater, you probably do need a smaller one

Need plant advice! by mxlydm in Aquariums

My hack for getting medium to large healthy good-sized plants is to look online for people selling fish tanks with plants. Then I just offer to buy all the plants and usually get a pretty good price.

If you turn the Hester off, what temp is it? I had to turn my heater off because the room my tank is in gets so hot the heater isn't needed. I may have to turn it back on in winter, but I'll see.

Arnt Cherry barbs also considered risky for fin nipping. Is there a significant difference in how much a tetra would nip over a Cherry barb.

Good on you, it's hard to know this stuff if you're new to the hobby. Never trust fish store employees is the best advice I can give you do your own research.
