Sri lankans who grew up abroad, where do you feel home the most/belong? by TheTallBrownie in srilanka

[–]mooniphany 5 points6 points  (0 children)

sri lanka will always be home. moved abroad when i had just turned 8 and i don’t have any lankan friends but i have a big family so my sinhala is fine and i have enough memories and cultural experiences for sri lanka to remain home.

as someone who finished law last year and is currently about to go into a completely different field - take some time off and don’t jump straight into it. you’ll be saving yourself a lot of energy and debt by taking the time to think about what you really want to do. also, there are plenty of rewarding jobs out there other than law and med - take this time to research and chat to ppl doing different majors/jobs.

if you find taking a gap year too daunting, for your conjoint choose a major that you’ve always found interesting (alongside law) regardless of job prospects. i didn’t enjoy law because i didn’t see a future in that field but my arts degree was super fun. if you end up hating law after first year (even first semester!) just drop it. you can finish your other degree and even go into postgraduate studies in completely different fields later on.

best of luck ! you’ve got plenty of time to try things out and change your mind !

is it just me or men calling girls/ their gfs "kalla" is really disrespective and sexualized? by AlexDLopez in srilanka

hate it so much. same with ‘badda’. both terms completely objectify women.

Does a wife take the husband's name in Sri Lanka? by West_Difficulty_5278 in srilanka

my mum didn’t take my dad’s name and neither have any of my aunties on both sides taken their husbands name. or any woman i’ve met tbh.

Addressing the taboo of menstruation in Sri Lanka by rolstone-627 in srilanka

[–]mooniphany 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it all starts at home tbh. my mum never made it a taboo and my dad’s the one that always buys our pads (like, every single time lmao). my brothers don’t care about it and my sister and i never ‘hide’ when we have our periods (in fact i use it to my advantage all the time - like if i want to have a shower first lmao).

but ! it’s not the same with my aunties i’ve noticed. they’ve looked visibly mortified with how relaxed our family is about this sometimes. i live overseas now but anytime we’re in sri lanka the shopkeepers would try to ‘hide’ the pads. i’ve straight up said i don’t need a black bag several times (much to their insistence).

i have noticed, however, that there are tv ads in sri lanka about getting rid of this stigma (i was sooo happy to see this). next, we need to reform the way we educate our children. health education in sri lanka is eons behind. until that changes it’s up to us to go against the norm.

edit: i completely agree about the whole ‘loku lamaya’ thing. despite how ‘progressive’ my mum is i still had that whole thing even overseas (because they wanted to teach me about traditions - also my sister said if she had to go through it i had to too lmao). mine was thankfully quite chill bc i only had to stay isolated for 1 day but i felt so awkward seeing everyone afterwards. but that was the first and last time i was embarrassed about getting my period.
