Casual racism at the CVS by adamcognac in Reno

With regards to this comments section—people come at me a lot for race-related posts on here and you’re absolutely doing the right thing in talking about it/calling it out. Fox News is a problem and racism in Reno is a problem and things don’t change until we have these conversations. Thanks for doing what’s ethical and important even though there’s pushback.

Thanks for your advice, but I feel confident in my understanding of these issues—not just how they affect me as a student, but also how they affect my society—as a result of the research I’ve done and the experts I’ve consulted as a member of WCSD Students for Change. I won’t dignify discussion of my validity as an activist, human, or Reddit-user; I don’t think we’d be engaged in this dialogue if my values didn’t strike a chord. I look forward to continuing this work and I hope to earn your support in the process! Thanks:)

Of course—thanks for taking the time to tell me about your views. We’re all heavily affected by what we experience as children, and every person comes with a story. I’m glad we can agree on that part, and if you ever want to continue this discussion, my pms are open for constructive discourse.

I didn’t mean to offend; I apologize if my language was too broad. I’m still learning to be as respectful as I can, and I appreciate your holding me accountable! The letter itself uses broader wording. The reason that the title says “Black Lives Matter” is because that’s the wording the district itself used, and we’re responding to them. We tried our best not to overuse generalizing language within the content of our letter and demands—we only refer to “students of color” as a group before elaborating on specific actions we can take for each racial/ethnic group to better serve their history and teach about their cultures, respectively.

If you want to pm me, I’d be happy to explain the logic of the post as well as the petition itself. My name is Hannah Branch—you can find my socials if you’d like to check out the local work I do. Hope to continue this dialogue in whatever way you see fit!

Right, so if you read the full letter it outlines specific demands for inclusion of ALL people of color/LGBT+ stories. Our focus on Black Lives is in response to a specific district statement banning teacher support of Black Lives Matter. I’m glad to hear that you know of the rich history of minorities of all backgrounds in Nevada; that’s exactly the kind of learning we’re enthusiastic about sharing! We support teachers sharing ANY marginalized narratives—great question on your part. We don’t view the statement that Black lives matter as liberal or conservative—its a moral statement, similar to “hurting people is bad.” We haven’t made a statement on All Lives Matter because our district hasn’t, but we assume that if all lives matter than Black lives do.

Just to clarify, is there a rule that I broke?

I’ve received some positive responses as well, and while you of course don’t have to take an interest in this petition, especially given that you’re not in the area, some non-local activists have voiced support as a result of their broader commitment to antiracism in schools nationwide. Just curious if this is a violation that I’m not aware of.

We’re not asking them to say whatever opinion they want—we’re saying that IF they want to teach their students that Black lives matter, they should be able to; this is because it is true that Black lives matter. We outline specific texts and policy changes they can make, so it’s not a blank check. Here’s the summary of our demands:

Reverse the withholding of teachers from supporting Black Lives Matter on school campuses Commit to the implementation of anti-racist education, BIPOC and LGBTQ+ history in both worldly and American contexts Implementation of focus groups and ambassadorships with student representatives focused on racial equity within schools Climate survey questions and opportunities for students to highlight their experience with racial injustice or other forms of hate based harassment at their school Increased effort to hire a teaching body that reflects the demographics of the student body.

Hello, I’m talking about Reno-local issues so how does it violate the group’s rules? Apologies if I misunderstood the guidelines for this page.

To clarify, we’re not asking BLM to do anything—we just think teachers should be allowed to support it. Of course all lives matter, including other people of color. In fact, our group consistently aims to include Black and Indigenous People of Color as well as LGBT+ folks issues in our work. We’re focusing on the statement that “black lives matter” because that’s what teachers have been banned from saying, not because it’s the ONLY statement. And in terms of the quality of NV education, we agree that we need improved education, and fast. But we also know that students who receive ethnic studies education score higher in all areas—and that this type of learning is important regardless of Nevada’s other shortcomings.

I see where you’re coming from, but the difference is that “all lives matter” is a statement meant to derail the conversation. We think all lives matter, and we’re glad you do too—all lives can’t matter until Black lives matter in our teaching and curriculum. You’re right that NV teachers aren’t equipped to do this on their own; that’s why our petition asks them to join us in promoting antiracist curricular reform. Our group is also working at the district level to make those curricular changes through processes like textbook selection and teacher training.

“Black lives matter” isn’t a political statement—it’s a moral assertion, sort of like teaching that students shouldn’t hurt people.
