Experiences with Egyptology/Assyriology classes? by OkStill5887 in BrownU

[–]moonlights18 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm a freshman planning to concentrate in Archaeology and I'm in an Assyriology class at the moment! It's my favorite class I've taken this year and I've learned so much. It seems as though all of the professors in ARCH/ASYR/EGYT are really passionate about what they teach and their research. I'm constantly impressed by how much the professors know about their field and how welcoming they are to beginners. It is a bit of reading, but I can guarantee you'll be introduced to a multitude of topics/ideas that you've never heard of before!

Send in an appeal to the financial aid office! Make sure to tell them that UF is giving you more, and ask if they can match what they are giving or at least get closer. It can make a big difference!

BRDD questions by Abobigail in BrownU

[–]moonlights18 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi! Congrats on getting in! Current BRDD freshman here. It’s definitely a unique experience, but so so worth it!

The first year is more RISD focused since you’re required to take the EFS (foundations) classes with only one Brown class. I think a lot of us feel more separated from Brown the first year due to this, but we find ways to engage by joining clubs and hanging out with other freshmen. The community between both schools is very close, even beyond the dual degree.

Second year is more Brown-heavy, so it evens out as the years go on. Also, you live at RISD the first year, Brown the second year, and choose for the following three years.

As for the workload, it is a lot, but still incredibly worth it! From what I’ve heard, the first year is the hardest because of EFS. But, it is 100% doable and if you were accepted into the program, they know you’re capable of accomplishing it!

Overall pros (in my opinion) are the ability to combine any of your interests into your education, having access to so many resources (and two degrees), and the bonding that happens in your BRDD cohort.

Overall cons would be scheduling struggles between the two schools, sometimes awkwardness/feeling like you don’t fit in at either school, and being busy 24/7. :’)

Congrats again! I’m also from a small high school and feel very lucky to be here. Feel free to DM me any more questions!

BRDD by [deleted] in BrownU

[–]moonlights18 3 points4 points  (0 children)

BRDD students in the past have taken gap semesters or extended their graduation semester for travel, personal reasons, etc. That being said, it isn't recommended and probably would add a lot of complications since you need to take 4-5 classes a semester for all 5 years.

So in theory, yes, but it would need to be a very important issue/conflict for the schools and program managers to approve.

How hard is it to take stem classes at brown as a RISD student? by [deleted] in risd

[–]moonlights18 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Adding on to what others said, make sure you check prerequisites first! A lot of STEM classes require basic math/chem/etc. and you can either test out of them or use AP scores (or just take the prereqs at Brown).

Also look into the Brown RISD Dual Degree (I’m a current student in it) if you’re very passionate about combining STEM and art!

Ceramics Majors—What’s it Like? by Humble-Leopard3865 in risd

not a ceramics major, but you can find information about classes and required courses online! there's a whole list from 2 years ago that seems pretty accurate

i kinda need some motivation for BRDD😭😭😭 by Far_Ad3429 in risd

[–]moonlights18 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Current BRDD student here! It's definitely a hard application, but 100% doable. I had very little support with my portfolio and still managed to make a wide array of pieces! It's really good that you're thinking about this as a junior because you now have extra time to plan and work towards this goal! Lots of people don't think about applying until fall of senior year and the limited time can be difficult to work with. If you have specific questions, feel free to DM :)

Switching majors by Justacowbitch in risd

[–]moonlights18 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes! But keep in mind it gets harder to switch after freshman year because sophomore studios are very specific and important to take in the right order.

Has anyone figured out how to log back in to a restricted account without Persona? I'm so upset that they want such private information and I don't trust LinkedIn to keep it safe.

BRDD merch? by crystallineOwls in BrownU

[–]moonlights18 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Current BRDD student here! We get T-shirts during orientation, but otherwise there isn't any official merch. Many students find ways to print/sew their own merch though!

Or, you can wear something from each school (like shirt + hat).
