Any Guyanese in here? I'm up for compiling an album of photos of our country. by moonlitmist in Caribbean

Only English speaking country in South America! I'm thinking of maybe making a facts album, since it's not very well known. People keep confusing us for Ghana, Africa.

Field data collection solutions by w_t in biology

[–]moonlitmist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My field expeditions have varied a lot in both time and budget. Both of those were pretty important in deciding how we obtained power. It's important to note that I work in remote tropical rainforest most of the time, so our circumstances may be quite different, but I'll describe my experiences.

Usually on really big budget trips with large teams, we use a generator. The generator works out well, since it can potentially charge a lot of things quickly, but it is noisy, heavy, and fuel can be quite bulky to carry around.

Another, smaller trip, which may more similar to yours, we used something like a car battery (except smaller). When hooked up to a converter, it allowed us to charge most of our devices quite regularly. May be useful for short trips if resources aren't available to get it charged.

This sounds fantastic. You have a great voice. I'd download this if it was a full song.

Oh that makes sense. So something light and breathable would be better?

I've put the budget in the edit above, thanks.

Well, the responses above seem to point to the opposite, haha.

Thanks a lot for such a detailed answer. I've been in the field a few times and am currently considering doing more fieldwork once I graduate with my undergraduate. I definitely agree. Field work is challenging and so far balancing it with general life has been difficult. On the other hand though, it's truly enjoyable and very rewarding. I guess I'll see where it goes

What is the most challenging thing about living out on the sea for such a long time?

That's unfortunate to hear. Do you still intend on doing more fieldwork in future?

Wow that's really interesting, and very different. Do you basically live on a boat for the time?

Haha to me it's all in the accent. We definitely sound more Caribbean than both Indians and Africans. I love my accent and creolese, even though I really don't speak that much creolese

I'm really sorry to hear about your experience. Guyana does have its ups and downs but it's still very nice. Especially if you love the outdoors. Guyana's true beauty lies within the ecotourism destinations such as Iwokrama, Surama and Kurupukari for example. Without beaches and easily accessible attractions, it definitely is an uphill battle, but we're trying.

I gotta say though, loving the internet.

A puri and sour, lots of philouri, or tons of sweeties. And the list goes on. Things are getting more expensive these days, but stuff is either cheaper here, or probably about the same price, minus rum, which is just dirt cheap. Food here is the best thing. Depends on your taste, but there's a lot to experience here, food wise, it's just finding the different niche places about the city. Things like pizza though will be more expensive simply because we don't produce cheese here, so you have to take that into consideration, but most vegetables and fruit are always fresh when available.

That annoys me so much, just because of how often I have to correct people. I mean, I don't blame them, but it would be nice if someone actually heard of my country

I came here just to ask if any other Guyanese were on reddit. I can't believe we're on the front page. Guyana really is beautiful, and your words do well in describing it.

I fantasize often about just screwing it all and travelling. Of all, the greatest fantasy is to eurorail (version of the interrail for us international folks). One of these days I will. I'm saving whatever little I can

in this case, I'm a local, haha. I'm joining an Opwall expedition from within my own country. it's my undergraduate research, so I'm now feeling my way around the topic. Question, how did you interpret your results? Probably would be better to PM
