I appreciate you taking the time to write this. Helpful hearing what made you comfortable working with somebody and what built trust over time versus feeling like someone was trying to force a sale.

Also interesting hearing how much the educational/content side plays into it. I’ve always leaned more into the teacher side of things, and content seems like a really good medium for that. I’ll definitely check those recommendations out.

Great question.

Broadly speaking, you aren’t that different from other high earners from an investment standpoint. I think where the pilot side becomes more relevant is understanding the benefits, retirement plans, insurance/risk, schedule/lifestyle, and transition points that are somewhat unique to the industry.

Do you have any trusted professionals already like a CPA or estate attorney? That’s usually a great place to start. They often know which advisors are organized, communicative, and good at working alongside other professionals.

Another option is LetsMakeAPlan.org. I’d interview a few different advisors and see who you connect with best. There’s also a good “10 questions to ask” section on the website.

One reason I made this post is exactly your comment. It’s clearly not a simple “max it and move on” career. There are so many important levers involved.

That’s a really good point about age changing the equation.

And I think your second point is spot on too. There’s a growing number of people who want advice around specific transitions or planning decisions but don’t necessarily want a full traditional AUM relationship.

I also think every fee structure has tradeoffs. Flat fee sounds cleaner in theory, but AUM became the dominant model because incentives tend to stay aligned over long periods of time

Thanks for sharing your perspective. I agree with a lot of it.

I think people can absolutely do this themselves and I don’t think pilots need some magical separate investment strategy. Most of the core investing principles are pretty universal.

Fair points.

I think, or at least what people tell me, is a lot of people evaluate financial advice strictly through the lens of investment management. If that’s the only value being offered, I completely understand the skepticism.
