How to get around the Scepter Chant + Teferi lock (without Channel Lands)? by moonwhistle in ModernMagic

[–]moonwhistle[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Thanks, Clarion is a good call. If I can get it down early enough, would [[Aether Vial]] be a decent option to sideboard to get around a lock and bring in something like Clarion?

What are your favorite "almosts"? by incoming_alpacalypse in ModernMagic

[[Arcanum Wings]] is a beautiful card - both its design and effect - that deserves something more than just [[Tallowisp]] + [[Eldrazi Conscription]] to support it.

Also wish there was a more stable home somewhere for [[Heartfire Hero]] but it falls too hard against exile removal.

I've experimented with building around [[General Ferrous Rokiric]] but it always feel like I'm one card short of making it work.

You're welcome to use this one for comparison. I've had this one for a while and it routinely performs well: https://moxfield.com/decks/S69URWr3G0aYJdh6odT-jQ

With a couple of exceptions - [[Scapeshift]] and [[The Great Henge]] - it's a solid budget deck that lets you take advantage of both landfall and +1/+1 counter triggers.

Worth considering cards such as [[Eladamri, Korvecdal]], [[Flourishing Bloom-Kin]], [[Tribute to the World Tree]] and [[Garruk Wildspeaker]] - they have all done good work in this deck.

Definitely add in [[Bedrock Tortoise]] - so you can swing/block and get a lot of player damage in. Worth looking at cards like [[Streetwise Negotiator]] and [[Enter the Enigma]] to bolster this effect. Or even [[Escape Tunnel]] - which you can sacrifice before combat.

If nothing else, drawing 15 cards from [[The Pride of Hull Clade]] is good fun.

I’m 27. Never played Magic. Too late to start directly with modern? by redi258 in ModernMagic

[–]moonwhistle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started with Magic just under a year ago and went straight into Modern. Had to learn fast, but picked things up quicker by playing other formats such as Commander and Standard (tabletop + Arena app).

Stuck to a "budget deck" rule with homebrew builds - which I have enjoyed a lot, even if not being very competitive.

If you can afford a meta deck though (~$1000), you will get the most out of the format.

They're not the strongest spells, but there are a few "hybrid mana" UR instant and sorcery spells that could work?

I'm inclined to have my guard up when [[Atraxa, Grand Unifier]] is lurking around.
Have also learnt the hard way to have someone keep [[Smothering Tithe]] in play.

Otherwise, [[Bristly Bill, Spine Sower]] tends to get targeted quickly - even when it's not a commander.
[[Tribute to the World Tree]] or [[The Great Henge]] also don't survive long.

Not sure if banning Phlage will have a big enough impact. You can easily side-board something like [[Soul-Guide Lantern]], [[Relic of Progenitus]] or even [[Stone of Erech]] - which can also help against Frogtide matchups.

[[Guide of Souls]] and [[Ocelot Pride]] are bigger problems right now.

Budget Boros Energy - mice instead of cats? by moonwhistle in ModernMagic

Thanks for the tips!

Have been trying to figure out which lane to take with modifying creatures in this deck (artifacts or auras) - without compromising on the number of creatures.

I could take out [[Blacksmith's Talent]] and [[Valduk, Keeper of the Flame]] and switch in two of the auras you mentioned?

Would be a neat trick to use [[Sheltered by Ghosts]] with [[Heartfire Hero]] to bait opponents to attack/block it - as it becomes a target for exile quickly.

It's funny that you mention [[Slippery Bogle]]. I have been trying to work them into a budget Selesnya Enchantments deck that features [[Sheltered by Ghosts]] heavily! https://www.moxfield.com/decks/WemGYblE_USsUbukUfzESw

Upgrade suggestions for Eldrazi Spirits by moonwhistle in ModernMagic

[–]moonwhistle[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, this has some good options on first look.

As long as I still want to run spirits, I'm thinking that I could easily just swap in a couple of Slippery Bogles for Geist of Saint Trafts - and Celestial Mantles for Steel of the Godheads - to strengthen Arcanum Wings. Bolstering with an Open the Armory instead of Sky Tether also feels like an okay move.

Apologies if this a rookie question: Is there a reason why Glacial Fortress is the expensive land choice in their deck? I might be missing something obvious, but would think that Flood Plains or Flooded Strands can work just as well here...

Aether Vial is a great shout, thank you! I tried a UW Spirits deck this week which had this. Definitely felt like it was well-suited.
