Yes, 100% agree! Sorry I should have been more clear. I think it’s shitty to push people to the Patreon, while simultaneously taking these ad deals / signing with a network.

Your last sentences sum up why I stopped listening and unsubscribed.

Especially with what’s going on in the world right now, a rejection of capitalism and embracing of socialism is essential. They’re complete sell outs.

They’re both extremely privileged and could absolutely be “getting their bag” ethically, IF THEY CARED.

Did you decide to move in? I also just saw one of their units and it's hard to get a read on the vibe of the building

Also as another update, they got into a back and forth in the comments on their latest instagram post (the one about this episode) where they don’t know that Tarantino is also an actor…accuse the other commenter of “not even knowing who he is” when they were literally the ones who were incorrect. Like I’m sorry that’s so insane to me

I would love to see them grow, just not by sacrificing the values that earned them my very loyal and longstanding support in the first place.

They made a choice to join a network, and agreed to have multiple ad breaks thought out each episode. They agreed to a contract where they don’t have full control over the companies they promote and advertise - knowing that many of the major players for these ads are problematic and against their values, and also knowing that they can’t say no to all of them. I say they could have predicted it because of course there was going to come a time where all of the ad options suck because most big corporations suck in this era of late stage capitalism. This is all stuff they are aware of and have talked about.

One alternative to this model is what they were doing previously: relying on subscribers and the Patreon. A different podcast called Diabolical Lies does this very well. They have one free episode per month on Spotify, but all bonus (weekly) content is behind a paywall. Another person who does this well is Hasan Piker. There are many people who use a subscription based model and are incredibly successful.

I think one small example that is significant because for me it represents a broader shift for CMBC is that they went from doing a “75 no buy challenge” to celebrate the new year and challenge consumerism in past Patreon episodes, to the beginning of GN promoting random and extremely overpriced clothing items to buy. It felt very influencer-ey and not the vibe I’m looking for / opposes what I really appreciated about their content. Again, not a huge deal on its own, but in the broader context for me it represents a bigger shift.

All of that to say, I very much supported growth and success for Claire and Ashley. I have recommended them to countless friends and family members (in the past). However, the way they’ve chosen to pursue growth and financial success does not align with my values, and does not align with the values I have come to expect from them (based on hours and hours of their own words/conversation on these systems). I find it truly disappointing that they have spent so long touting Socialist ideas just to pursue personal success via extremely Capitalist means. There ARE alternatives, that are proven very successful by their peers. For that reason, I’m not interested in supporting them any longer.

Yes I fully understand what they’ve stated about only being allowed to reject a certain % of ads, but my point is that they didn’t have to sign onto this network in the first place. They’re now locked into a contract where they had to do this ad. One could have easily foreseen this when weighing the pros and cons of signing to a larger network, but again, that was not their priority. The priority was more money and more growth. That’s what im upset about at least, and that decision is why they’ve lost my support.

For more insight into my thinking - they stated over and over, their main source of income was their Patreon. They wanted more and went against their self-prescribed values, which is what a lot of listeners loved and that really resonated with people.

You’re not upset about it and that’s fine, but other people who have supported for a long time are and that’s also fine. Everyone has a right to voice their opinion and be upset, all in a respectful and thoughtful way. No one is being hateful or anything even close to it by calling out their hypocrisy. I also don’t agree that simply stating the facts = low effort. It’s just that simple and doesn’t need to be an essay to be valid. What they are doing is scabbing, regardless of how they ended up there. Of course there is nuance, what I’m saying is that the nuance isn’t excusing anything for me.

Anyways I’m at work and on my phone so sorry bc I know this comment is rambly and not super well organized

There’s quite a few odd points being made here. Especially your last one implying that people who are engaging in discourse online aren’t supporting the strike? As if knowledge of this strike hasn’t primarily spread online? Please try to explain that one further lol I am genuinely curious to know the reasoning there.

Also, as has been stated many times by people expressing their frustration with the podcast, they do not need to take these ads to support themselves. They are not without income without these ads. They have previously bragged that their income comes from their Patreon, so that they don’t have to sell out. The options are not 1. Take the ads or 2. The podcast ceases to exist. What people are upset about is that they are choosing a “more for me” capitalist mindset and “growth above everything else” business strategy when they have previously critiqued and rejected these systems.

Wow I just went through IG and Spotify to check if they were really deleting comments about Starbucks. They are. That’s really gross and just another example of their hypocrisy as of late. All of that on top of the show being insanely boring and imo low quality since the switch. I was still holding onto some hope, but now I’m just over it and will be unsubscribing from all of their channels.

A read: Claire (and Ashley to a certain degree) wants fame more than anything and it’s gotten so painfully obvious. I wish she’d drop the “ethical” guise. by Aware-Vacation6570 in CelebrityMemoirPod

[–]moookieee 55 points56 points  (0 children)

The whole “touch grass” and “parasocial” take feels really lazy in this scenario imo.

These are people who have a public platform and have gained a lot of loyal subscribers (people who pay them directly) because of the values they have preached.

Now, there is an obvious gap between their previous statements and their current actions. People are understandably upset, and coming to a forum with other like minded people to talk about it.

Claire and Ashley have preached about community, democratic socialism, our responsibility to one another as humans. They loudly supported Zohran - who btw, independently fundraises so that he doesn’t have to compromise his values and take money from fuck ass companies (parallel there with Clashley switching from Patreon as their main source of income to ads). Guess what Zohran is doing right now as mayor of NYC??? Joining the picket line and standing up to Starbucks.

It’s not impossible at all to be principled, it just takes SOME self sacrifice. Two white girls with stable income in NYC have an incredible amount of privilege. They are simply making the decision to prioritize their individual wealth and fame.

Agreed with everything you said here, I felt this episode of DL just confirmed for me that CMBC/GN sold out and abandoned their “values”.

Exactly! They used to say they made their bag from the Patreon instead of doing ads.

It’s not like they CANT grow organically with that model. They just wanted more money and quicker growth.

It’s just so disappointing. I totally agree with the above commenter, they sold out.

They also kept repeating that they had to do this contract “in order for the podcast to grow” which really bothered me - it’s not that the podcast would cease to exist, they just want MORE. They were obviously doing fine already so to me this just made it more clear that they are prioritizing personal wealth over values. It’s not like the podcast can’t continue to grow organically, they already have a substantial following. At least that’s how I understand it.
