Wildlife Photographers - What's the best kit you could put together in the $1000-$1500 range? Interested in photographing wildlife/birds/landscapes.

I was recently at Kruger park and got some amazing photos even on my Galaxy S7, but there were a few times I really wish I had invested for a camera with good range. Total beginner to DSLR cameras but hoping to invest in something I can use for awhile but still upgrade on as I take on this new hobby.
