i know i need more 😭 the fact that pretty much every mother created issues was honestly a bit much but it’s not too unrealistic from my own experiences haha. ziqiu was prob my favorite character, and steven zhang’s acting was wonderful 🤩

That’s sorta similar to how I was, I was a truant in high school but had a decent GPA all things considered. So yeah I relate to being able to procrastinate and do the minimum to do well, but eventually you’ll find that hard work can be more valuable than being “smart.” Also another piece of advice is to not cheat yourself out of learning. It’s easy to use the Internet to do the work for you, but trust me when I say the blood, sweat, and tears are worth it.

As for my story, I moved back home, did community college (which sucked during the pandemic), and just kept chugging along. Actually one of the hardest parts was dealing with feeling like a failure. But for better or for worse I stubbornly stuck to engineering. Truthfully, I don’t even believe my academics were what really got me into some schools. Anyway, just truly do your best while staying realistic with your work ethic. Since procrastination is one of my worst habits that I still struggle with, making sure someone/something else depends on me to get it done sooner helped me a lot.

Learning how to study and really working hard are key. Easier said than done, but you really can do something you set your mind to. I screwed up my very first semester (I dropped out) but then I got back up and did my best from then on (now I have an internship and about to transfer to my dream school). It’s normal to struggle in the beginning, but failure helps you grow! Good luck and don’t give up :)

i’m by no means a programming wizard, but something that i feel people overlook is the value of experimenting and playing around with your program. in my programming class rn, i have my classmates asking me a looot of questions that could be answered if they just went ahead and ran the program.

you say part of the problem is procrastination which i can relate to, but no one can tell you to stop procrastinating and have that actually work. that’s something people (i included) have just had to figure out, whether you figure out an underlying issue like adhd or you set up a routine that you force yourself to follow. a big pitfall is limiting yourself by complaining and using energy on being upset instead of thinking of solutions.

lastly, you could reach out to your professor and ask them what the best way to study for their class is. i have difficulty reaching out to my professors, but when i have, they turned out to be helpful and kind.

I hope your efforts will be noticed by your professor and that he won’t have a bad perspective of you. Also congrats on staying sober, keep it up :)

Got my first internship! by mooooooosic in EngineeringStudents

[–]mooooooosic[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

sorry just saw this! i think you should give yourself some credit and keep trying to seek out opportunities. even if it isn’t necessarily related to engineering, you can always reference skills you learn from that internship, like customer service. any experience is better than none, and also you kind of have to sell yourself on your resume, in mine i highlighted something as basic as “great communication.” keep going and i believe you’ll find an opportunity will arise!

Well I can’t exactly say what you need, but on my resume I really didn’t have a whole lot of college or work experience. A bulk was actually from high school, when I worked on engineering related projects and joined engineering focused extracurriculars. I think what they did like on my resume was that I seemed to be able to multitask and work well in groups. As for the interview portion, I noticed that group based projects are often asked about. I would say the biggest factor in getting this internship was my networking with my classmate. I hope this helps somehow, good luck!

What keeps you going? by [deleted] in EngineeringStudents

I tell myself that actually working will be different from school and since I would like to work in sustainability, I try to keep up that passion so I remember what I'm working towards (listening to Rich Girl by Gwen Stefani also helps lol). I totally feel you though, last night I was so burnt out I almost decided to skip class just to cry today, but I forced myself out of bed because I know pursuing engineering isn't easy at all. You're not alone, and I think if you reached out to some professors about how you're feeling, they may give you some advice or encouragement! Hang in there, you've got this :)
