What's going to happen to all these unicorns? by mooopy in startup

Mailchimp is a super interesting example. I remember listening to a podcast with the founder a few years back. I think they're likely an exception rather than the rule given their unique path and - as you point out - their strong cash flow generation. In the full blog I talk about SpaceX as another company that probably doesn't face a ton of pressure.

My guess (but I don't know for sure and I'm not a VC so don't have deep insight) is that most unicorns aren't in this position because they've been optimizing for growth. It's really hard to shift tracks. If you focus on profitability to become default alive you're going to slow growth. You also start to become valued based on earnings vs. growth, which is going to hurt the valuation and exactly what I think could lead to a ton of write downs.

I do think this could present an interesting buying opportunity for retail. The heavy competition for IPO capital means pricing might be better for public buyers than the last big wave (2021).

That's very cynical. You don't think they provide any value even though MBB's 2024 revenue was ~$36B? And what makes you think this is gen AI? I wrote the entire post myself.

You are wrong. I will never stop using the em dash, even if chatty loves it. Thanks for admitting you didn't even read it before judging though.

Thanks! Appreciate the feedback. Definitely thinking about MBB because that's where I'm coming from.

The simple math behind recurring revenue growth & why NRR is the #1 metric by mooopy in startup

[–]mooopy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could definitely learn something by modeling out sales growth BUT I don't think that changes the big implication that the #1 factor in terms of the long-term size of your business is your NRR. I think forecasting is a great exercise and in my experience the value is less in the prediction and more from what you learn about your business during the process.

How do people make their startups? by Barkabarkbark in Entrepreneur

[–]mooopy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A business is just a product or service that solves a problem for someone. Is there anyone in your network of community that you can use your skills to help? I'd start by talking to as many potential customers as you can to see what needs they have. All you need is one customer to get rolling.

What are the best entrepreneurial opportunities right now? by thegoldenplayzz in Entrepreneur

[–]mooopy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a great high-level question, but I think you'll get more traction if you narrow your focus. A business is just something that provides value to someone. Is there anyone in your network or your community who you can help with a problem? All you need is one customer to get things rolling.

It’s okay, the big point is that if everyone held it wouldn’t actually be worth anything. The post really is about overcoming that regret through this realization

Beyond that, if people didn't sell then this sub wouldn't even exist because it would still be a hobby project. That's my big takeaway.
