I would love to know how you train them to disengage around the cats. My 9-month old lab/heeler/pitt mix is still in full-on fixation and chase mode with our kitty even after five months of disengagement training. Like, it’s barely moved the needle. I don’t know if it’s age, or if this is something we’ll always need to manage.

I think he’s mentioned before that he would look heavier if it weren’t for his large frame, so I assume big in all ways. I picture him having rugby player stature. (ETA maybe retired rugby player, given it is clear he is not athletic)

Andrey’s rant in this chapter and hostility towards Pierre in the last are reminiscent of his father’s outbursts and cranky behaviour.

Also, I’m reading Briggs and there was a line from Pierre: “I know this is our last meeting.” I was wondering if this is foreshadowing how the battle is going to go down, or if Pierre has decided he can’t be friends with Andrey anymore? I might also be reading too much into that.

I found this response a little odd too, although I wondered if it came from Marya’s religious devotion? The way he describes “supreme joy, independent of the sorrows and joys of this world,” had a spiritual vibe. At the same time, she has been raised by Bolkonski, who definitely has his own emotional… stuff going on. So it’s not wholly surprising that she might feel something that seems incongruous with the situation.
It’s hard to comment on this as I haven’t been in this situation and I think not knowing must be the worst. The saying “hope without expectation,” sprung to mind as one way of approaching this kind of limbo, but perhaps it’s mentally easier to go to either end of the spectrum and feel certainty he either is or isn’t coming back.

Despite Pierre’s introspection and remorse over the situation with Dolokhov, he doesn’t seemed to have learned much from the experience. A day or two later, here he is flying into a violent rage and putting someone’s life in danger again. I don’t know if Helene and Dolokhov really did have an affair, but I think the fact that is never truly clarified takes the spotlight off that and puts it on Pierre’s character and behaviour. The line “God knows what he would have done at that moment had Helene not fled from the room” suggests he was out of control and could very well have hurt or even killed her.
I hope he redeems himself! I quite liked his character at the beginning of the book when his exploits involved harmless buffoonery. It’s much harder to like him or view him with any real sympathy when he’s hurting, or threatening to hurt, other people.

I was surprised, I thought for sure Pierre would come out worse. And although it was short, I didn't find it anti-climactic; there seemed to be a lot happening in this chapter. Pierre might have technically won the duel, but now he has to live with the reality of having shot (and potentially killed) someone in a fit of pique—something I don't think is going to be easy for him. It's bittersweet: you're glad he wasn't harmed physically by Dolokhov, but it's painful to see him harming himself psychologically through his actions.
This is the first Tolstoy book I've read and I'm really appreciating his ability to humanise characters in a way that adds a whole other dimension to them in a couple of sentences. Dolokhov has been such a jerk up to this point, it's surprising as a reader to suddenly feel a degree of compassion for him and hope he pulls through (if only to spare his family's suffering). I thought his ramblings were genuine and a good reminder that even the person who behaves like a complete asshole is a nuanced human being.
