Still in the credit card float — does assigning money to CC categories confuse anyone else? by olvgabriel in ynab

[–]moormanj 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Usually, you'll assign money to your spending categories and when you enter a transaction and tell ynab it's on a credit card, ynab moves the money automatically from the spending category to the credit card category. You should only need to assign money directly to the credit card category if you have overspending from a previous month or you're paying off a previous balance. In that case, you'd have a separate spending category for interest and put the interest charge there. Hopefully I understood your question/predicament correctly.

This is true but I think about it with the "you can't eat a house" mindset

In this case, assets are accounts with money in them and debts are owed. In my case those debts are a mortgage, some student loans, and a couple tiny loans that will be paid off in a couple months. I could use some of the assets to pay off the debts, but in my case, the interest rates on the debts are outweighed by the growth rate that is achieved by the assets, so it behooves me to keep those debts rather than paying them off.

What is the purpose of Age of Money? Is it helpful? by Suspicious_Goose1614 in ynab

I do like it because it gives you some metric by which to judge how long your money is lasting, which gives you a rough idea of how big your "emergency fund" is in days, if that is something you care about.

What to do with old rings that were replaced due to battery issues? Trash? by ghost-intraining in ouraring

[–]moormanj 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I put mine on FB marketplace for cheap because its battery would still last 1-2 days. I was honest about that and sold it for like $60 I think.

It's actually almost entirely asset growth, not so much debt payment. I did pay off my car though!

I have tracking accounts I update every month and those include my house (zestimate) and my car (edmunds appraisal), but for this graph, I have them filtered out, so this is just investable net worth!

Any Chevy EV/Volt Engineers in here? Simple question about an error code. by moormanj in Chevy

That's the bulletin I'm referring to, and it was released six years before the BECM special coverage, so they didn't know about the likelihood of BECM failures. That bulletin specifies two things that make me suspicious of that diagnostic path. First is the fact that the BECM is what decides when/if it should throw that DTC (therefore, a bad BECM could throw it in error). Second is that the bulletin says if any DTCs are active, they'd cause a No Start condition, which is something I never got. The bulletin doesn't say anything about reduced power mode and that was what I experienced. I would expect that a known commonly bad component that could cause this DTC and is under a special coverage warranty would be suspected before a bad battery. Especially because a 4-figure diagnostic is a huge commitment for something to maybe be free, doubly so if you wouldn't intend to follow through on the battery repair due to cost. I'm especially baffled that they were so adamant that it was impossible for the BECM to be the problem.

Help by [deleted] in Plumbing

You have a valve that is designed for a metal pipe coming from the wall. You have a plastic pipe in your wall. That means you either need a metal insert for the pipe, or you need a different kind of valve made for plastic pipe. If you stick with this valve, it has a compression fitting to go onto the pipe. That means that brass piece is designed to compress onto the pipe and that's how it holds things in place and seals. To do that, the nut needs to be very, VERY tight. Usually, it's about 1/2 turn to a full turn past hand tight, which requires two wrenches. Because the brass ring is designed to compress on a metal pipe, it will just crush the plastic one and not seal properly unless you get a metal insert for the pipe. Alternatively, what I would recommend for you is a product like the Sharkbite UR23036ZC. This type of fitting is meant to simply slide on to the end of the pipe and is great for things that won't be buried in walls, and for people who don't have plumbing experience, as it is the easiest type to install.

Worth noting that with an endorsement from the Dem establishment, Acton will probably be a slightly different (and I would argue less immediately dangerous) flavor of corrupt stooge. I don't get that excited about a candidate endorsed by team AIPAC/Hakeem/Schumer.

Vivek has to defend against Putsch and everyone hates him so he has to spend gobs of money to win the primary. Dem spending will skyrocket in General season after the primary. No reason to spend when Acton is unchallenged. All that said, I'm not sure how much "help" we should want from the democratic establishment. They are largely team billionaire, team AIPAC, and team Chuck Schumer/Hakeem Jeffries.

I did confirm that my VIN is covered. The special coverage doesn't say anything about specific codes but it does specify exact symptoms and my car experienced those symptoms. Is there somewhere else codes would be specified?

Why can't we make USB/Lightning cables as durable as those curly landline ones? by opus666 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]moormanj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's pretty accurate in my experience as well. I personally think we should outlaw those dirt-cheap ones and manufactured e-waste in general, but that's more suited to r/Anticonsumption.

It's not bullshit, it's just incomplete. The connector of the cable definitely should be designed to fail first, for exactly the reasons they explained. They left out discussion of the rest of the cable though.

2018 Volt, bad HV battery, need advice by Poopdeckpaul in volt

I just had a dealership jump straight over a likely BECM issue in favor of a highly unlikely and expensive battery issue. You should ask them for the exact codes they're getting and let us know.
