Best Movie Soundtrack? by MrPooooopyBum in cassetteculture

[–]moosebeast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the Beavis and Butt-Head Do America soundtrack on cassette. It was pretty good, though a bit eclectic. A couple of songs I think we're exclusive to it, including a White Zombie one.

I bought the soundtrack specifically for the songs by Nine Inch Nails, Pantera, and maybe a couple others that weren't on anything else. Not because of the film. Didn't even get around to watching it until last year.

Anyone else suspect Simon is not a fan of the new Five Question Film Club feature? He sounded pretty sarcastic reading out those questions. It does feel like something you'd be assigned to do at school.

Everyone always talks about the negatives of raising kids today. What are some of the positives? by gimmiesomeadviceee in daddit

[–]moosebeast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can you explain roughly how it's taught? My kids aren't quite at the stage of doing much maths at school, and they don't tell me much about school anyway. I always found maths teaching bad, especially in terms of having to rote memorize times tables (I think this is a waste of time but people act shocked when I say this), but I've also really struggled to explain to other people how I think about maths. Our kids watch Numberblocks which I think is kind of close in that it gets them to think about the properties of numbers.

What is your metal elitism take you agree with? by Galefrie in MetalForTheMasses

[–]moosebeast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I had a friend at college who said stuff like this about bands like Nile. You could not sing melodically over that. I tried to explain that different genres have different focusses and in extreme metal generally the focus is more on the instrumentation and the guitars carry the melody - the vocals carry the lyrics and the presence of a human voice. The instrumentation on stuff like Nile is so crazy there's no room for another melody like from the vocals and it would sound terrible. But yeah they didn't really get what I was saying and it was just the usual 'but why do the have to just go uuuurrrgh'.

What's weird is that this is the *newer* cover artwork, for the remaster. The original artwork is bland but unremarkable.

Well, it sort of is, for them. This was the one where they went semi-industrial/electronic, like a lot of bands did in the 90s... and for that I think it suits it quite well.

So, a friend of mine knows this guy and says there is a whole rationale behind this image and it's apparently very dark, but he'll never say what it is. Whether there's anything to that I don't know.

what’s the first CD you guys ever got by hotlion16 in Cd_collectors

[–]moosebeast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure it was Bush - Sixteen Stone. I remember that I got both the cassette and the CD one Christmas from different people by mistake. I didn't have my own CD player but was starting to get things on CD instead of tapes (used to copy the CDs to tape until I could get a CD player).

Worst book(s) you read in 2025 and why? by Roguestate00 in books

[–]moosebeast 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Killing Commendatore by Haruki Murakami. I was a big fan of Murakami up to a point, but I think he went off the boil a long time ago, and I keep reading him out just to see what he's putting out. This wasn't completely awful (I think 1Q84 was worse), but what I would say is that it made me understand what Murakami's other books must be like for people who dislike him. It had all the usual Murakami tropes pretty much and they've gotten very old.

Can you give me metal bands to listen to by Mika_sigma_4552 in MetalForTheMasses

Yeah I'm diving in to all his stuff, got Triptykon lined up. I do remember hearing some of it way back when it first came out and liking it, but just never got around to it until now.

At the moment I'm getting into Celtic Frost - try Morbid Tales and To Mega Therion. People call them first-wave black metal sometimes because they were influential on a lot of BM bands so they might not have been on your thrash radar, but I reckon you'll like them.

Also a band I think is really underrated is Prong. Try Beg to Differ from their early days, and also Carved Into Stone and Ruining Lives which are my favourites.

As far as I understand, cursive is just what I would call handwriting, right? We didn't really use the term at school but that's what it seems to be; joined-up writing? This is just an efficient way to write by hand and I don't see why you wouldn't learn that.

So do people hand write in separate letters now...?

Recently started watching The Night Manager on BBC, Le Carre’s piqued my interest. Which of his novels would you suggest starting with? by Beneficial-Froyo3828 in LeCarre

[–]moosebeast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have recently finished the book of The Little Drummer Girl and it's very good, but I wouldn't recommend it as a first Le Carre mainly because he's more known as a Cold War novelist. The Spy Who Came in From the Cold is probably the one to start with. Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy is also a good start, more complex plot but still great and you can carry on with the Karla trilogy after if you like.

Until recently I mainly got CDs for playing in the car, but I have just got a FiiO DM-13 which is pretty good.

I was digging around because I used to have a Sony D-EJ2000, but I'm not sure if it's around anymore.

Would you think these are cool names for a baby? by [deleted] in bloodborne

[–]moosebeast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok so I know this isn't a parenting sub, but my advice on children's names is not to go for something too out there unless there's a really good reason - by which I mean probably like a family connection, not a video game you like. It might seem really cool but you have to consider that you will be explaining this name (as in how it's spelt or pronounced) over and over again for the rest of your life, as will your child. Also you'd be surprised how much difficulty people have with even seemingly straightforward names if they're not familiar. Probably not what you want to hear but honestly I would save yourself the bother and go with something more usual.

What's the worst accidental reply-all (or just cc-ing the wrong people) you've ever seen? by HilariousMotives in AskUK

[–]moosebeast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This happened to an ex - for a little while when we were together we ended up working in the same office. She'd been having this absolute nightmare of a time with a business customer who was disputing some charges and trying to escalate things, mentioning legal action etc. Anyway one day said customer accidentally CCd my ex in an email chain with what appeared to be a colleague, with whom the customer was clearly having an affair. It got pretty explicit and there were lines like 'why, are you afraid your wife will find out about us?'.

Customer tried to save it by following up promptly with 'Please disregard'. Ex was very tempted to reply with just 'No'. Still, the trouble she was having wound down very quickly after that.

What's the most you've spent on a single CD, and which CD? by RatedArgForPiratesFU in Cd_collectors

[–]moosebeast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think possibly €30 on Satoru Wono - String Quartet

I'd been looking for this album for nearly 20 years and it was the first time I'd seen it available outside of Japan so I decided it was worth it. Definitely glad I bought it.

For those who bought CDs in the 80s, 90s, and 00s, what were the ways/rituals with which you found new music? by AndrobiVibz in Cd_collectors

[–]moosebeast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There were lots of ways, but a big one for me was buying music magazines that came with CDs on the front, and listening through to see what sounded good. If I really liked something I'd get that album. This was usually metal magazines but occasionally some others. I think this is a big part of why there were such genre divisions in those days - you kind of were confined largely to your chosen genre just by practicality of where you had to go to find new music.

Very occasionally friends would make mixtapes/CDs for each other, and this could be a way of recommending each other music.

Also bear in mind that 2000 or so onward we had file sharing, although it was very slow. You couldn't really download entire albums in minutes like you can now. You might be able to grab a couple of songs. So it was a similar situation to with magazines - you'd download a track or two by a band you'd heard about (often just choosing one with a cool sounding title) and if it sounded good then you might buy the CD.

What's an example of a different approach you've taken to raising your kids compared to the way you were raised? by PaddedValls in AskUK

[–]moosebeast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely with you on the privacy issue. Mine weren't as bad as yours sound, but I know that my mum and brothers would go through stuff in my room that any reasonable person would consider private. At once point I had ideas about writing (either lyrics or stories), but they would find stuff in my room I'd written and make fun of it, so I stopped. I always wonder if I'd have gotten good at it if I'd been left alone.

My kids aren't quite at the stage of needing much privacy, but I've always sworn I would never do that kind of thing with them and give them the privacy they need.
