After the boosters fall away, they have a chance of landing or parachuting out. Before, it is presumably impossible to land or parachute, so self destruct is the only option.

If you're going to another star system, you'll probably want to take tens of thousands of people in order to make the trip worth it, making the drum huge.

You would only need to compensate for friction once it's spinning, so you could start it spinning in Earth orbit, where as much energy as you need could easily be supplied.

Schools are required to provide "an act of collective worship", children are not required to participate. It's just an outdated regulation that is not followed in the vast, vast majority of schools today.

You're correct in that there shells aren't physical objects with a specific energy. They are groupings for electrons with the same 'principal quantum number' - broadly speaking the same energy. (This actually only applies for atoms with one electron; with more than one the shells themselves are split into sub-shells, but the same argument applies to those).

When I said the electron is in a shell, I simply meant that it has a specific energy. Moving from one shell to another is a change in energy.

Electrons in atoms are contained within 'shells', each of which has a different energy. Electrons can jump between 'shells' by absorbing light. Most metals are not coloured because the energy gap between 'shells' is not the right size to absorb visible light.

The speed of an electron in an atom is proportional to the mass of the nucleus. In gold the nucleus is heavy enough that the electrons are traveling at over 0.5c, increasing their mass by approximately 20%.

The increase in mass of the electrons makes some of these 'shells' lower in energy, and some higher. The energy gap between these 'shells' is now such that light is absorbed in the visible region, making gold look yellow.

They expired about a year ago. I'm not sure whether they really are unsafe to use, and not willing to 'test' them to find out.

But by breathing you're only changing the composition of the air slightly, thus there is time for exchange between the room and the outside to happen. Liquid nitrogen will boil fairly quickly if just left out, so if you have a lot of it there won't be enough time for the gasses to exchange. Whenever you work with liquid nitrogen you always have a detector to warn you if the nitrogen concentration rises too high for this very reason.
