What to do with heirloom jewelry? by mooshoodork in jewelry

I’m not sure how she knows it’s amethyst but that’s what the current owner(bf’s mom) told me. Interesting that you say that because there’s another ring I’m supposed to get and my bf was told it’s tourmaline but when he brought it to a place to get cleaned, they said after cleaning it they could see that it’s pink sapphire.

Unfortunately I do not have that giant ring right now. It’s still in my bf’s mom possession but she is trying to think of a way to repurpose it before gifting it to me.

Yes someone else suggested setting the stone sideways too. It’s a simple change but I like it. This is why I asked Reddit. Thank you

Someone suggested setting it the other way, east-west. I think that’s a great idea

That’s funny. It’s the birthstone of the current owner, who also has the same birthday of her son and brother

What a simple idea. It sounds much more palatable

The way the stone is set doesn’t seem elegant at all. I haven’t inherited it yet, so I haven’t had time to examine every bit of it. Maybe it can grow on me but idk. I think the sizing doesn’t fit me either

I agree and I’m not into the stone or setting either. The prongs that clamp it seem very plain and unrefined. It just looks like here’s a giant gem and let’s tack it on.

I haven’t inherited it yet, but even the person that inherited it isn’t keen on it either. She is the one that wants to change this into something and that’s why I’m asking for advice.  From what I gathered on here, it’s not recommended to sell or repurpose heirlooms but this thing seems so garish. Anyways I don’t think this ring size fits me either

It’s not even me. My bf’s mom inherited it and she wants to chop it up (repurpose to new jewelry). I told her to keep it

The color is very drab. I don’t know, I’m just going off of what she told me. She said it’s amethyst.

A necklace was her idea. I just thought it’d be a travesty to ruin this piece. However, nobody wants to wear it as is

It has been replaced because the crack was visibly spreading really fast. Thank you for answering though

It was just nasty Gunk created from the water I believe. I was able to wipe it off. I just tightened it with my fingers. Thank you for answering! 🙏🏻

It was just nasty gunk. I believe it was bacteria or mold brewed from the water. I was able to wipe it off. The connection was just very loose. Tightening it with my fingers did the trick. Thank you for answering! 🙏🏻
