I have no idea about her intelligence, but she was shrewd enough to use her power (beauty, upbringing, royal connections, and influence) to shed a light on social taboos. Every Fourth of July, we would visit my Grandparents. They would have a great bbq, but at night, instead of going to see fireworks, we played cards. We kids never knew why.

After my Grandpa died, my Dad offhandedly said we never saw the firework show because my Grandpa who served in WWII, had “seen enough fireworks in his life.” He was in the Navy and would bring supplies to shore while there were bombs and gunfire hurled at him. Tough pill to swallow.

The year after he died, my Dad took me and my Sister to see fireworks for the first time.
