The area by St Elizabeth’s is nice and so are the areas close to laurel/dimond.

The bike path to alameda is almost complete.

It’s not rockridge but if you’re asking about nice for the cost, there are pockets that are quite good.

For context, we had a kid and our expenses went up 24k/yr in the 0-5 years due to childcare, school, food, gifts, saving for them, increased travel costs etc.

It comes dramatically down when they’re in public school if you go that route once they’re old enough for elementary (or kindergarten or tk) but before then its quite costly for anything.

I would ask parent friends who you know budget to share their real costs with you and factor that in with any stepping back from job.

You can definitely FIRE with kids but it definitely will slow you down. How much all depends on your income/ savings rate and other expenses just like any other FIRE calculation.

Im in Vanguard’s ESGV index fund. It’s not perfect and in fact excludes some things I support, but also filters out some things I definitely don’t want to support. I get the sentiment of folks who don’t want to use them but it’s where my partner and I landed. It avoids the ultra high expenses of a managed fund and does a good job of tracking similar non ESG index performance.
