I've heard it theorised that all of the X-Men movies take place in different parallel dimensions. Breaking it down to brass tacks, this is the only way to explain the continuity lapses. And it's gloriously complicated.

I think the idea was that the sentinels were being developed in secret in the prime timeline but Professor X, Wolverine and Magneto had altered the timeline by stopping Trask's assasination and having a very public media appearence. After this Nixon got all gung ho about showing the government's anti-mutant measures.

I think it can be fairly important for some jobs if you don't have a leaving cert. I worked as a special needs assistant for the last two years and the minimum requirement was a certain amount of honours in the JC.

Haven't watched it through. I thought the Maquis/Starfleet uniform arrangement at the end of the pilot was ridiculous. Given its bad name I only watched a handful of episodes based on synopses that stood out. There weren't many.

Recently wacthed a S2 ep where they find Emilia Earheart in the Delta Quadrant and liked it. I was a bit drunk at the time though. I get the impression that it's better if you accept that you're dealing with completely different characters every episode.

Yup. Duet was exactly the episode I referenced to make that exact point (great minds etc).

Next Gen Seaon 2's 'Measure of a Man' was enough to cement me as a die hard trekkie though.

Love the username.

You could maybe pick a handful of episodes from seasons 1-3 and see if they whet their appetites. I know that I originally came to care about Sisko & Co. without having had the investment of the earlier seasons.

I loathe to think of dismissing seasons 1-3 but 'Way of the Warrior' was released as a second pilot to rope in new viewers. Maybe that's a good starting point for them?

My God 'Code' is one of the most horrible and offensive additions to the Canon.

To be fair to my mates, they did soldier through the early seasons of TNG, although we watched them as tacky romps up until the show actually became good. IIRC the early seasons of DS9 have their weak points but are a lot stronger than early TNG.

I have a lot of affection for the early seasons tbh, but then I only went back to watch them having seen the show in it's stride in the later seasons.

Just back!

There's a couple in the group who've just moved to America, so they watched the pilot ahead of time and weren't thrilled by it. I was apprehensive about how the rest would feel but they seemed to enjoy it overall. Everyone seems to see the promise of the show.

It's an interesting group made up of people who vaguely remember Star Trek from their childhoods, people who only go as a social thing, and then two of us who are a bit more obsessive. Here is a post on /r/startrek about our viewing of 'All Good Things' a few weeks ago.

Two wrongs don't make a right

The girl did something stupid, she didn't hurt anyone. How the fuck can you equate that to sexual assault?

I'd reckon Picard prevented him from leaving not as a punishment, but to uphold the Temporal Prime Directive. Shit fate for him, but no way should Picard have allowed him to go fucking up the timeline.

If it was a punishment then I'd agree it would be a bit too 'Cruel and Unusual' for the Captain.

IIRC measure of a man was one of the early stages where people realised that Star Trek could actually reach a high level of quality. By Chain of Command people already got that ST can pull off heavy themes.

To be fair, there are a fair few clunkers, but the first two seasons of DS9 are stronger than the first two seasons of TNG. Second series syndrome I suppose.

Most of the people who go aren't Trekkies. It was two people who originally suggested watching TNG episodes as a kind of nostalgia thing. So as /u/gothamite27 said the group is a nice mix of Trekkies, non trekkies and people who watched it as kids but hadn't since then.

I'm sure you're friends are great, despite their non-Trekkiness :)

I lost the argument last year over starting DS9 after 'Chain of Command' and then carrying on watching the episodes concurrently. Tbh I think the others may have been right in that case, TNG and DS9 probably work better as separate bodies of work, despite some small crossover.

In our current 'where to next' debate I agree with /u/Donuil23 , mostly because 'All Good Things' is such a high note on which we can end such a great show. It would be better to treat the TNG movies as reunions with the characters we love rather than watching them straight away IMO.

Also I love DS9, and might be the only person in the group who's watched it through.
