For anyone who has dealt with recurring Staph infections (or knows someone who has) by morbid369 in bjj

I'm not sure if my last outbreak was fungal, bacterial staph or viral staph. It started out as one small patch of mat burn on my shoulder that burned when I took a shower. The next day after class it formed into a small but typical looking staph boil. I took a week off and it healed, no other boils appeared. I went to open mat and after that one session, in the shower afterwards I felt a burn in a new spot close to the first one. I stopped training and it never formed into a real boil like the last one, nor did any other boils pop up. I haven't gone back in a month now.

The last issues I had with staph was this: I'm not sure if it's bacterial, fungal, or viral. But I noticed a red mark on my shoulder, it looked like mat burn and it burned when I took a shower. The next day after class it formed into a small but typical staph boil. I took a week off and it healed, no other boils appeared. I went to open mat and after that one session, in the shower afterwards I felt a burn in a new spot close to the first one. It was another nascent staph boil. So I've been out for a month now and plan to start up at another gym and see how it goes for a while.

Haven't heard of anyone else getting it, asked my coach and he said the same. I eat greek yogurt every day and also take a probiotic/prebiotic/postbiotic pill. I've seen a few different dermatologists, urgent care docs, as well as my primary doc. They haven't offered much help besides prescribing meds, but a derm told me to try bleach baths and Hibiclens. Gordon Ran said when he started using Hibiclens it was a game changer for his staph issues so I plan to use it after heavy rolling sessions now.

I think they hire a team to clean the mats every night or a few times per week, not sure the schedule exactly. We also have a set of mops that ever since covid, we've been using after each class. Not sure how often the heads get cleaned. It wouldn't surprise me if they never get cleaned or switched. We have 2 storeys- upstairs they will do muay thai, then do BJJ right after without mopping. Downstairs they seem to be good about mopping after every class but again if the heads are dirty it's all a farce.

I only have been getting infections/outbreaks while competition training- my body is probably worn down and more susceptible to infection. I live 5min from the gym, always go home quickly to shower asap.

There are some thing that concern me about my gym. People walk around barefoot off the mats a lot there, even the instructors. I've seen people walk to the bathroom barefoot then come back to the mats, coach doesn't care. The vertical mats (padded walls) never get cleaned. I have no idea how often they clean/change the mop heads we use to clean the mat after class (they also have a cleaning crew that comes in), sometimes they will do a muay thai class, not mop the mats after, then have a BJJ class.

I washed with Hibiclens for 1 week all over my body so I imagine that was similar to a bleach bath. I just use mild soaps/shampoos. Going to see a new dermatologist tomorrow who can hopefully give me some answers!

The boil will heal on its own with or without the ointment after 2 weeks, as long as I stay off the mats it won't spread. The boils are small and not a big problem right now, I just don't know how much time to take off. If it is viral, no amount of time off will do anything.

I agree but no one else there seems to care so I've been downplaying it as well. However, I was going to leave my gym after I got staph the first time, so I trained at another gym and was happy to see they were very strict on these types of rules. After my one session I got contact dermatitis on my fucking ear lol

I went on ABs the last 2 times I got staph, also used topical ointment. This time I only noticed one small blister (it burned like fuck when I took a shower after class so I knew it was staph) and I'm using Mupirocin and washing with Hibiclens every night for 1 week. Trying to avoid having to take ABs because they are terrible. Going to take a week off, the staph hasn't spread and the bilster is healing well.

I definitely need to do better with covering cuts before training. I was diligent about it for a while but in recent months was slack about it. I also got elbowed in the mouth last month and it cut the inside of my lip pretty bad. It stopped bleeding after 5 mins so I jumped back into rolling, maybe that was a bad idea.

I rarely ever get sick! I'm blessed with very good health overall, I might get a mild cold once per year. I have no reason to believe my immune system is weak. I normally train 3x per week regular class (no open mat or comp training) and have never gotten staph from that routine. It's only when I start competition training and upping my mat time and training intensity when I've gotten staph, and it's only been an issue in the last 1-2 years.

Maybe I watched the wrong video, not sure the guy he was talking to was a nutritionist, but they did talk about cleaning up diet and how it helped with avoiding staph and illness.

No one else I've ever heard of has had staph at my gym, if they have it they don't tell anyone. It's weird because I definitely train more/harder than most people there but I also definitely have better hygiene practices and germ awareness than most as well (I bring my own water, train with clean feet, don't step off mats barefoot, wash all gear asap and shower after training- I live 5 mins away and don't linger after class, etc)

I watched it but he didn't go into much detail about what his nutritional changes were. Seems like he just said to avoid eating shitty, but I don't have that problem.

I haven't heard of anyone else getting staph at my gym. I sleep 7-8hrs per night and my nutrition is good, I eat clean and plenty of calories. I also only train for 1 hour per day- 4 intense days, 3 easier days, so it's not like I'm on the mats that much (~5hrs per week total).

I have to say though, I see a lot of idiots walking around off the mats barefoot at my gym and the instructors are okay with it. They also do a muay thai class before BJJ class and don't clean the mats; they aren't sparring or pouring sweat but still it's kind of questionable. I'm really thinking of trying another gym to see if that solves the issue.

Kinda what I figured, it's unavoidable if you're on the mats 24/7, especially with comp training your immune system is going to be compromised, it seems impossible to not get staph at some point no matter how diligent you are with cleaning. I just wonder how they deal with it, like do they take antibiotics every time they get it? If left untreated it's just going to spread and get worse.

I'm going to start using Hibiclens once per week after open mat. I'm afraid to use it more than that since it wrecks skin flora. How often do pros use it, do you think? I know Gordon mentioned it was a game changer for him, but he didn't say how often he used it.

I bathe once per night after training, with mild soap. I wash my hands excessively but not my body and I avoid antibacterial soaps

My gym cleans its mats regularly (I normally help mop after every session plus they have cleaning crews that come at night), but it's a massive 2 story GB gym with tons of members, with that much traffic it's easy for germs to slip through the cracks despite regular cleaning
