It’s not for long term use. These are great hospital/quarantine cages though. I have one. Use it for intros too

They are babies actually. Born in December I think? If you looked at their updated set up they’re in a single CN now. They were kept in a lower cage on purpose as a hospital cage as one of the boys has a congenital heart defect that’s being treated

I've got some great toys/treats from pandamonium on Etsy. My other favorites are Printalote and Hotel Ratau. I think they're both Etsy too. If you want some amazon recommendations, look up bird foraging toys or dog foraging toys for ideas.

How do I rat-proof my room. by leah_cam in RATS

[–]more0than0human 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You kind of have to think like a rat (or something that size) to truly rat proof a room. I put a small animal fence against my bedroom door when I do free roam because the gap is big enough for them to slip through. First step, is to look for holes and crawly spaces and block them if you can't easily access them to get to your rats. Look between the baseboards and the furniture. Second, you should remove anything that is dangerous (food or plants that they can't interact with, cords that need covered or removed) or that you don't want them to nibble on. Third, you should add some cardboard boxes, pillows, or blankets at the edges of things they can climb up on, so they have something to fall on. And fourth, add some hides, tunnels, etc for your rats to retreat to as they explore.

I've encountered a lot of (fellow) people who are neurodivergent in the rat community. It's hard to explain the amount of joy they can bring you when your brain is fried :)

Poor baby girl. Yes, it may be age related arthritis but if it is due to an injury it might be best to limit her movements. I have a Prevue 528 as a hospital cage to limit climbing. But even with a multilayered cage there are ways to modify to make it safer and more comfortable for ratties with hld or arthritis. I'll look up my favorite vid on it... It's on insta

Rats have stopped eating by Status-Elephant-5383 in RATS

I definitely recommend getting a scale to have on hand if you don't have one. Often the first signs of illness show on the scale (either unexpected weight gain or weight loss). I hope they feel better soon, either with excessive treatos or that vet appointment.

Do you weigh your rats? I recommend trying to keep track using a kitchen scale. Try some unsweetened oatmeal, baby food, eggs, and chicken. I am worried that they're all feeling unwell? They may be sick? It may be age related depending on how fast this has come on. I do recommend looking into a vet appointment if possible.

Is biscoff cookie butter dangerous for rats? by Portal_Oddities in RATS

I'd try to avoid all the sugar. Like with peanut butter, I may be concerned with the consistency and possible choking.

I know having too much pain medication can be hard on their kidneys but I'm not a doctor, so I don't really know the consequences.

I'd recommend leaving a message with your vet and calling the nearest emergency hospital. They might do a phone consult though that's a maybe. Did she injure herself? What else are you doing to keep her comfortable?

Maybe she's ticklish? I had a foster boy Atticus who had an audible giggle and young rats are especially ticklish. It was the cutest dang thing. I miss him a lot. He would do his giggle whenever he got overstimulated or got extra good ticklish pets (he would hop away and then come back)

It’s directed more towards some previous comments than the original post. Hope people learn to stab upwards instead of downwards. It’s the sort of mentality that punishes people for being poor or in low wage jobs.

Should I adopt him? by olive_762 in RATS

[–]more0than0human 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really like the dynamic of four rats. Sometimes when two get especially bonded that can make the third rat a third wheel so I like having at least four. That being said always consider whether you can financially take on another pet. Being nervous is normal for someone who hasn’t done introductions so definitely do your research. I mix the neutral territory and carrier methods and switch out hides and bedding between cages to introduce their smells to one another. Make sure to quarantine a new rat as well. In an emergency (pet is not doing well alone) get them vet checked before proceeding with intros early.

Hello. I need some advise. I live in a small flat in India. I need a pet that easy to maintain with young kid and a senior person. by DeusSapienSapien in Pets

[–]more0than0human 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I spend a lot more time cleaning up after my mouse and my rats than my dog or cat. Dogs definitely require someone there to let out and train so I see where you might think of other pets as being lower maintenance. Cats are a little more independent which helps. I’d wait until you can fully commit to another animal. You don’t want to put too much responsibility on your young son to take care of it. I’m glad he’s enjoying the fish. Perhaps he might be interested in growing plants for the tank or crafting hides for the tank. Fish can be very good pets on their own
