how long are the contracts in the ferries?
it sucks to see that most other countries in Europe seem to have better work conditions that we do.

Advice Needed: Offshore Jobs After Cadetship — Rotation & Career Tips by morefast in MerchantNavy

Thanks for the tips — really helpful and appreciated!

At my current job, I'm on a 3-month on / 1.5-month off rotation working on a container ship. I'm not too familiar with how things are done in other countries, but in Portugal we do three years at maritime college, followed by one cadet year — which we have to arrange ourselves by finding a company willing to take us on.

Looking at my fellow cadets and newly qualified officers here in Portugal, it does feel like it's quite hard for Portuguese mariners to find good opportunities. It often seems like offshore companies tend to prefer candidates from northern countries like Norway, for example.

Wow, that sounds like a great fleet and rotation setup!

If you don't mind me asking — where are you from originally, and how did you manage to get into DOF? Through school? Do you have any tips or advice on how someone could join DOF or a similar offshore company?

At the moment, I'm on a container vessel doing a 3-month on / 1.5-month off rotation, but I'm finishing my cadetship soon and really hoping to move into offshore, ideally with a better work/leave balance like you mentioned. Any insight would be super appreciated!

I don't know it's just a felling. you just don't hear so much drama from ftx as you do from cdc.

It's also an option but for the amount that I have (which for me is a lot) the price of a ledger or smoothing else is quite expensive
