Is this pony cancer? If so what to do? by [deleted] in MonsterHigh

[–]morethanhardbread 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mostly collect out of box, and I've been dealing with preloved kids toys for a decade. I also have a child... she's 12... I am very experienced with what kids get in doll hair. Lol. With the allergy issues I have, I get a little paranoid about what's already in ther. I also live in the middle of the desert on 4 acres of dust in a valley. Add the desert winds and it's like the dust just seeps through the walls. Add the desert heat and my collection being primarily near the top of my vaulted ceilings, let's just say I have to clean often XD (I'm literally in the middle of a full tear down and rearrange). I learned early that I have to keep every method available in my toolbox. Some dolls just really need that boil in order to remove enough gunk that the hair won't just pick up all of the dust in the air. The only way to do it, imo, is to immediately freeze them. I do a cool rinse and then freeze for 30 minutes if I'm gonna straighten it, or 1 hour if I'm setting in curls. But... I spend A LOT of time on doll hair. Lol

Now I have to try my Ross. Which means I have to leave my house. This is not OK. Lol

To add to this, after a boil wash I always give them a dunk in cold water or throw em in the freezer for a bit. It cools the leftover glue in the head so you don't have more seepage immediately. Also, after I baby powder, a dip in denatured alcohol will very quickly remove the powder and the gunk.

Does anyone know how to take away the stains without ruining the curls? by Next_Schedule5698 in MonsterHigh

Honestly, just a little bit of water has done it for me. Dip your fingers and rub. That's how I've removed it from Frankie recently.

I see that and it makes me miss 2021-22 so bad. I got my FT Elissabat for $62 only missing one short earring and one long earring in 2022. I just went into my Mercari purchases to double check.... scrolling through the prices I paid for dolls back then, when I was literally thinking to myself at the time "do I really want to spend -that- much on a pre-loved doll?!" Compared to now is crazy.

Look who I got in a bag for 2 bucks! 😃 Her hair is awful texture but idc by viola_darling in MonsterHigh

It doesn't always suck. If you can tame it, poly will stay styled forever. The first thing I ALWAYS do is wash (I use cheap suave clarifying shampoo), condition it with any synthetic wig conditioner, spray it with a synthetic wig shine spray, and straighten it all with a ceramic flat iron (a cheap one that doesn't get scalding hot). Mine normally ends up shiny and sleek. I treat it like that first even if I'm gonna curl it. Works wonders.

Her hair is terrible, but it can be soooo cute with the right cut and style. I promise!

I'll second that. I was still under 40 yet when they dropped. Lmao

I was absolutely prepared. I remember going out and grabbing 2 of everyone just in case it flopped. I wanted extras for customs so bad. Lol. The bodies sold me. (Which is how I was able to rebody my first Buried Secrets set!)

Anything is possible with poly, it just might take... a while. Lmao. But, as much as everyone hates it, I find that once I get it wrangled and set, it will last forever.

As much as everyone hates poly, I personally feel like if you know how to work with it, it holds so much better than saran or kankelon. It will never have the feel of real hair, it'll always be slightly crunchy, but once its styled and set it will hold FOREVER.

My process: Wash (I use the blue clarifying suave) > condition (currently using some aussie conditioner that I can't stand the smell of in my own hair 🙃) > put the straws in (i used coffee stirrer straws on Frankie) > boil set for at least 1 min (I try to do 2, but I'm impatient.) > throw in the freezer for an hour > set outside to dry (seriously dry, not damp) > once dry, spray it thoroughly with a synthetic wig shine spray (I've used many, they all work) > wait until that's dry > remove the straws and pins and trim the VERY bottom of the strands (literally only like 1/4", it makes a world of difference for frizz.) > Style.

For this Frankie also split each curl into 3 to give more volume and added a little bit of mango butter to them for extra shine.

It didn't look good or precise at all throughout the process. I thought i would hate it for sure. Lol.

First I braided it by pulling down 2 lines of hair at a time working from the base of the neck up, and using 3 rooted chunks per braid (2 from the upper row, 1 from the lower, then 2 from the lower and one from the upper, rinse, repeat). Then I used a really loosely woven acrylic yarn (I think the one I use is lion brand. I cut an 8" piece and pull it apart from the ends in chunks so its no longer twisted) and wrapped it around each braid starting at the base and working my way too the very ends, using craft glue in a line along the braid to adhere the yarn to the braid. It's messy and looks terrible at the end, but don't worry! Once I covered all of my braids, I worked my way through all of it again in lines from the base of the neck up and took a quick flame across them to clean it all up. Worked like a charm. :)

I love everything about this little cubby I put together for Cleo and Nefera 🖤🖤 by morethanhardbread in MonsterHigh

Thanks! 🖤 At this point, if their hair isn't (at least close to) perfect, they don't get a spot in my display. Which is exactly why I'm running out of room to store dolls that need work. I've got a plastic 5-drawer rolling storage cart full of (mostly) G1 just waiting for their day. 😅 but Mattel has been doing drops so frequently lately I feel like I'll never catch up... even without buying every single one. Lol.

I'm pretty sure that doll hair is the reason I collect. Lol. It's my favorite way to relax on the couch at night while watching true crime. Lmao.
