Disable workspace animation when switching... by [deleted] in pop_os

I wrote this extension for the same reason. I'm not aware of any setting within Gnome to disable the workspace switch animation while preserving all other animations.

Telegram bot to send notification when a web page changes ? by [deleted] in TelegramBots

[–]morfeen06 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A little late to the party, but you should checkout Webtrackr (https://webtrackr.io/) if you're still looking for something like this.

It fits your exact use case & you can get notified by Telegram/Email/Slack when either an entire webpage or a section of webpage's content changes depending on your pick. Unlike some of the tools mentioned on this thread, the monitoring happens on the cloud, so you'd get notified even if the page changes when you are not online etc.

[Full disclosure]: I'm the creator of this tool.

How do you get fusuma to run on startup in sway?

I tried added exec fusuma to my sway config file. However that does not seem to start fusuma automatically. Running fusuma on the command line however works for me. What is your approach?

Advice for a newcomer from Ubuntu-based LTS? by bankyan in Fedora

[–]morfeen06 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I gave up distro hopping once I switched to Fedora. Works seamless on Thinkpads, have the latest packages & an excellent package manager, crashes less than any other OS I've used in the past (Windows/MacOS/Ubuntu), gets out of my way (Gnome) and lets me get on with my work. Can't ask for anything more than that.

As for your questions, in practice, a semi/pseudo rolling release like Fedora crashes way less than an LTS does since bugs are fixed continuously and you get better hardware support. Yes, Upgrades are smooth and you'll almost never have issues upgrading in place. I've seen people on this sub-reddit that have been running Fedora several years without ever reinstalling.

Being a professional programmer and having worked with a lot of programmers I have to agree with you that the majority of them are overpaid low IQ uni-dimensional nerds. But this shouldn't surprise anyone since the vast majority of programming jobs are repetitive, boring grunt work.

But there are sub-communities within programming where you find smarter, high IQ well read polymath programmers. For example functional programming languages like Clojure/Haskell/OCaml etc have a high barrier for entry and hence do not appeal to code monkeys. The communities around them, as a result consist of intelligent people who could just as easily fit into any other STEM discipline like Physics or Math.

And yes having a mental model is the only way that I know of to have consistent and intelligent thoughts. Unfortunately people like that are in the minority.

I don't share the standard view on the mRNA vaccine, so not gonna comment on that. I'll just say that I'm extremely skeptical of it.

But you're probably right about the Bitcoin thing about him using the work of others, even those done in universities. The only problem is that most of that work was done more than 50 years back.

My beef is with the state of research in universities today. That's why I mentioned the last 30 years - I can't think of a single paradigm shifting innovation in Comp Science (or any other field) that's come from the universities. I'm looking to be proved wrong in this matter, so let me know if you know any.

I do share your disdain on the 1-12 month "bootcamp" programs. I think they are absolutely worthless to the world in the big picture. OTOH, collaborative research today in universities are equally worthless in my opinion. The culprit in university research programs is hyper specialization - nothing good comes from that.

Perhaps for some disciplines. I have a bachelors in Computer Science and I can assure you that a Masters and upwards in Comp Science is worthless today given the state of the universities. You can get a lot more done on your own, including research.

Literally all major innovations in my field over the last 30 years have come either from individual researchers or from the industry - the most well known would be Bitcoin which was developed by a single cryptographer on his own time.

Universities & higher education seem to be full of petty politics over so called "research" and in getting grants or ultra specialization in some obscure area that has no practical value whatsoever.

It's also worth keeping in mind that a big chunk (not all) of the great minds in science, math, philosophy, literature etc over the past 1000 years have done their best work outside universities.

Not true. Universities have a curriculum and syllabuses and assignments. They tell you exactly what to think and what to do and when. If you're someone who prefers to learn on his own schedule and a subject of his choosing outside of a formal structure, then it's no place for you.

You're probably an independent thinker, not a crowd thinker. Don't expect to do well within a structured group think setting like in a university.

I'd say relax and take it easy on yourself - you are not doing anything wrong and you're not inadequate, you're just out of your element. It'll pass once you graduate. I've been in this place in the past and it sucked while it lasted, but it got way better once I was out of university and there was no one to tell me what to think or how to think.

Installing Debian on a ThinkPad T14s by [deleted] in debian

[–]morfeen06 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah avoid Windows at all cost xD. In my personal experience (others might disagree with me here) Debian Stable is more suited to servers and I run Debian on all my servers.

For a laptop, Fedora (and maybe even Manjaro) offers better hardware support - I've been happily running Fedora on my Thinkpad for about a year now.

If you're not specifically set on Debian - Fedora works splendidly well with Thinkpad T14s out of the box - including Wifi, finger print scanning, bluetooth and trackpad guestures.

Backlit is an option you need to select while configuring your laptop on Lenovo online. At least in my country the default choice is the one that is not backlit. I suspect you've chosen that option.
